On this day, a queen was born! Naomi Campbell is an influential figure to today’s generation. Not only has she showed us what longevity in the modeling career looks like, she has single-handedly created a career that makes her one of the most booked, busy, and coveted models in the industry. Her life is an  example of what it means to work hard, dominate your craft, and take no BS from anyone. In honor of Naomi Campbell’s 49th birthday, here is a look at her groundbreaking career.

Naomi Campbell started her career at the tender age of 7 when she made an appearance in Bob Marley’s music video for, “Is This Love.”

In 1986, Campbell was scouted by Beth Boldt, head of the Synchro Model Agency, while window-shopping in Covent Garden. She was only 15 years old. By April of 1987, one month shy of her 16th birthday, she appeared on the cover of British Elle.

Over the years, Campbell’s runway career took off. She dominated the modeling scene in the late 1980’s. During this time, she, along with Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista became known as the “Trinity,” the 3 most in-demand models of their generation.

In 1987, Campbell graced the cover of British Vogue. She was the first Black model to land the cover since 1966. Following that cover, she became the first Black model to cover French Vogue in 1988. This came after her friend and designer, Yves Saint Laurent, threatened to pull all advertising from the magazine if they continue to refuse Black models on the cover. In 1989, she became the first black model to cover American Vogue in September, the most important and coveted issue.

In the 90’s Campbell released a book, dabbled in music, and tried her hand at acting. She made appearances on The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Girl 6, New York Undercover and many more.

From the 1990’s to the 2000’s there wasn’t a music video, magazine cover, or runway show that Campbell was not part of. She reigned supreme as one of the most influential Black models of her time.

In March of 2013, Campbell jumped on the reality TV train by joining The Face, a modeling competition that coached and eliminated budding models.

In 2015, Campbell landed herself a reoccurring role on Empire. Later that year, she was featured in a two-episode arc in American Horror Story: Hotel.

With such an elaborate career, Campbell finally locked in her very first beauty campaign with Nars Cosmetics at the age of 48. She really shows us that age ain’t nothin’ but a number! She also created a YouTube Channel that gave fans a sneak peak into her world. She used is as a platform to show her philanthropic work in Africa. As she gets older, Campbell has made it a point to give back.
