Should you appeal your tax bill?
(Chicago Sun Times) — You just opened your Cook County property tax bill and the amount feels like a punch to the forehead. What do you do? 1. Pay the bill. The deadline is Dec. 13, and even if you are certain there’s an injustice, make sure you pay in time. If you don’t, penalties start to accumulate, and the home could be subject to the annual tax sale. Overpayments entitle you to a refund. 2. Check the exemptions. A common reason for a big increase in the bill is that exemptions formerly on the property have dropped off. Compare your bill with previous versions.
