(WSJ) — The city is calling it a “supermarket sweep.”

Inspectors from the Department of Consumer Affairs visited more than 700 grocery stores in the past year and found violations at nearly half, according to a report released Wednesday.

The inspectors searched for relatively minor offenses — lack of produce scales for customers, items missing price tags — as well as more troubling violations that can result in overcharging. One in three supermarket price scanners failed tests for accuracy, the DCA reported, and 48% of stores collected taxes incorrectly.
