Now that we’ve popped the cherry on the season with summer’s unofficial start, it’s time to get all the fun started. That means heading to the beach, amusement parks, backyard cookouts and all the other warm weather happenings we’ve been longing for all winter. Mother nature has finally given us the green light to go ahead and enjoy some fun in the sun. So while you’re preparing your agendas and adding exciting things to do, remember the other fun part—dressing for all the season’s activities. It’s an unfortunate fact that African American kids drown at a rate more than three times the rate of white children. Statistics say that our kids don’t know how to swim and their fear of drowning is the number-one reason, well, why they can’t swim. There are all kinds of theories why black children don’t have swimming skills–financial, geographical, and social reasons are often mentioned–but most important is what steps can we take to keep our kids safe.
