Tech Talk: Female-Focused Computer Programming Organization Hackbright Academy Expanding
Hackbright Academy, a programming training program just for women in San Francisco, is hoping to expand in 2013 and is currently accepting applications for its next class, which starts March 4. Applications are due January 15.
So far, Hackbright has graduated two classes of women: the first with 12 and the second with 16. Eight of the 12 members of the first class immediately started looking for employment and all received offers, TechCrunch reported.
At first, students learn coding basics, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and more, and then the students work on personal projects for the second half of the class. The program, which costs $7,500, also includes guest lectures and networking with startups and companies in San Francisco. For students who immediately get new jobs, Hackbright will refund their fee. And the female-only atmosphere was beneficial to the participants.
“Once I got in, I noticed a difference for myself because I’m kind of quiet,” Zoe Kay, part of Hackbright’s first class, told TechCrunch. “I like to be really sure of my ideas before I talk about them. It’s not like all women are like that, or that men aren’t like that, but I find that there are a lot of similarities between women. So it was a really supportive environment. We had really good rapport.”
Hackbright Academy hopes to expand by bringing in more students and instructors, as well as looking into running the program in other cities. What do you think? Is this something you’d be interested in?
The Rundown: Paul Ryan, A Proposed “Soda Tax” And the Olympics Come to a Close
-Mitt Romney announced his choice for the VP slot on his ticket this weekend — Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. Right away the Obama campaign began to spread its message about Ryan’s proposed budget, attacking the suggested changes it would make to programs like Medicare. Ryan will be campaigning on his own in Iowa today, the state where President Obama will start a campaign tour. A USA Today/Gallup poll shows that 42 percent of Americans consider Rep. Ryan to be only a “fair” or “poor” choice for VP. However, among Republicans, the poll shows that more than a third now say they’re more likely to vote for Romney.
-San Francisco is the latest city to try and institute a “soda tax,” a tax on sugary drinks. Thirty states already have a tax such as this, and then there’s New York Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed restriction on large-sized sugar-sweetened drinks, though there’s no tax involved with that proposal.
-The Spice Girls, Jesse J, Annie Lennox, and One Direction were among the many musical acts that took the stage at the London Olympics closing ceremony last night.
-Robert Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television and the investment business The RLJ Companies, is launching a “faith-friendly channel” on YouTube called “Alright TV.” TV and film producer Tracy Edmonds (Jumping the Broom) will lead the it. The channel will feature family programming focused on music, self-help, comedy, reality, and more.
-Motorola Mobility is going to cut 4,000 jobs and close one-third of the total 94 offices it has around the world. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in May. One-third of the jobs lost will be in the U.S. Motorola has fallen well behind the pack — Apple and Android — in the mobile phone space. Remember the Razr?

Meeting In The Bedroom! Survey Shows How Big Cities Get It On
Looking to charge up your sex life? You might want to visit New York, Miami or Atlanta.
So here’s the thing: condom brand Trojan surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults about their sexual habits and these cities topped the list in quite a few of the categories. The survey shows that Miami is at the top of the leaderboard with the average number times sex is had per year at 177 while the rest of the country “only” averages out at 151 times per year (New York is second at 156 times per year). I guess more than just the temperature makes it “muy caliente” down there.
Not to be outdone, New Yorkers seem to be more vocal about their sexual desires. At 27 percent, New Yorkers are at the top when it comes to expressing their fantasies to their lovers and 78 percent are open to trying a vibrator with a partner during sex. If you’ve ever walked through the West Village and took stock of all the “toy stores” that are there, this won’t surprise you that much.
Oh but I didn’t forget you, Atlanta. The survey says that at 72 percent, Atlanta is the most sexually adventurous city and they also have the highest sex drive (7.2 out of 10). It’s no wonder the residents confessed to having an average of 25 sexual partners in their lifetime (Atlanta is at the top of that leaderboard too). Yes, you all are keeping it “hot” indeed.
The survey doesn’t mention sexual orientation of those surveyed but it’s funny that these cities topped the list in most categories (the survey was done in a total of 10 major cities) because women claim in all these cities that they’re not really getting any because there’s a shortage of men. I’m not just talking about black women either; peek your head into the conversations of our white sisters (if you’re not already cool with them) and you’ll see that they’re having the same issues many of us seem to be having. But hey, a woman’s got needs just like any other man would so we’re “getting it in” even with the issues some of us seem to be having with our deeper relationships.
Check out the survey here. Do you consider yourself sexually “free?” Would you like to try a little something different to spice up your life?
Evening Eye Candy: Braylon Edwards

You know you’re good looking when you grow one of those humongous Rick Ross beards every now and then and people still want to sop you up like a biscuit (not my words, someone else’s, but I feel them). Braylon Edwards, a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, is HOT. Not too long ago, I had no clue who he was. Sorry, I’m not a huge NFL fan like that. But after a co-worker talked him up to be sooooo fine, I had to check him out. She wasn’t lying! From the crazy abs to the lips, and you can’t forget about those sparkling eyes, the brother has it going on. He may not be on my list of play husbands, but he could for damn sure be my “manstress.” Enjoy the coffee brown goodness (smiles).

(NPR) — Authorities in San Francisco had to shut down several city subway stations Monday after demonstrators tried to stop a train from leaving a downtown station. The protesters were upset that the Bay Area Rapid Transit agency last week shut down cellphone access in the subway to prevent a protest. BART police have been the target of protests over alleged brutality. Most recently, two BART officers shot Charles Hill, a transient man they said threatened them with a knife. That shooting is one of the reasons that Jevon Cochran has come to this and other protests. ”They could have detained him in a non-lethal fashion but they chose to shoot and kill him,” Cochran says. On July 11 protester who agree with Cochran stormed a BART station and tried to stop a train from leaving. When transit authorities heard there was another protest scheduled last week, they cut off cellphone service in the subway to interfere with the organizers.
Bookstore Holds on to Black Power in San Francisco
(KALW) — In San Francisco, Fillmore-based Marcus Books has been a hub for the neighborhood’s black community since it opened in 1959. Founders Julian and Raye Richardson believed it was the first African American bookstore in America. A lot has changed since it opened – these days, the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and the poetry of Langston Hughes share shelf space with books like Justify My Thug and Heartbreak of a Hustler’s Wife.
Can Black San Franciscans Hold on to Political Power?
(San Francisco Chronicle) — Malia Cohen, as the lone African American on the 11-member San Francisco Board of Supervisors, always keeps in the back of her mind that she could be the last. The black population in San Francisco, which gained steam in the 1940s with the draw of war-related jobs in the shipbuilding industry, peaked in 1970, when 13.4 percent of the city’s residents were African American. Since then, there has been a steady decline. The 2010 U.S. Census tallied the black population at 6.1 percent, and demographic projections by the California Department of Finance have that percentage shrinking to 4.6 percent by 2050. And as long as identity politics, such as race and sexual orientation, continue to play a role in how some people vote, the dwindling number of African Americans living in San Francisco puts black representation on the Board of Supervisors at risk.
