The first time Ri-Ri tried this look in 2009, it was actually pretty cool. She had a short cut, so it fit the rock-star chic look that she was trying to go for. But after doing everything from Ronald McDonald red, light brown, and beach blonde colored styles, she decided to take a walk down memory lane with her new pitch black long hair and shaven side. It’s actually kind of cute, but I think it worked better when her hair was short. Now she just looks like Cassie from afar. But what do you think?

    the first time I saw the second fantasia pic (after doing a hair photo search online) I thought she was just getting up from her hair stylist’s shampoo bowl, with dripping wet hair and wearing a cutting cape. only upon reading your article did I realize in said photo she’s actually wearing regular clothes and that is her hair STYLED. I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to style choices (“to each her own”, “it takes all kinds” and all that crap.) but even I have to say…. yikes. go see your stylist if your hair skills are leaving you with… that.

    I think its Hott!!! Ive had mine shaved for about 2 years and loved putting all kinds of designs on my shaved side. Even some times going all the way “bald” on the side!!!

      me, too… I’ve had it for almost 2 years and I’m keeping it! I’ve always had short hair; long flowing hair always seemed just a little too precious… now I can have lovely long hair and still get a haircut once or twice a month- and the design options are endless!! (not to mention the glaringly hot badassedness of our look.) …how can we go wrong? ;)

    I grew up in the 80s and remember when Pepa, Lisa Lisa and Cyndi Lauper rocked these hairstyles! The singer from Bow Wow Wow. Who else had this look back in the day?

    Looks like Cassie is the winner with Rihanna and Kelis as runner ups. I think Kelis started the shaved sides in 2006.
    It’s a wonder Naomi Campbell didn’t go this route. She’s almost there if you know what I mean.
    If I was still in my early 20s and still relaxed I’m sure I would’ve tried this trend. It’s a no-no for us naturals and the super kinky.
