Tiffany Haddish’s “The Last Black Unicorn” recently made the NY Times Bestsellers list as critics are commending the book for its honest storytelling regarding Haddish’s difficult journey to success. In the book, Haddish recounts dark moments in her past that were plagued with sexual abuse from a foster parent as well as physical abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband. But recently, Haddish’s ex-husband spoke up to say that the actions that Haddish says he’s responsible for didn’t take place quite like the way they are described in the book and Haddish took to social media to explain he may have a point.

Haddish recently explained to her followers that, unbeknownst to her, some stories in the book were adjusted to make for a more exciting read. She says that in the audiobooks, however, she clarifies those stories in her own words:

“”I ain’t gon’ lie. Some stuff in the book is a little bit… I was like, ‘What?,'” she said. “I don’t know if when they edit, maybe they tweak things a little. So, then, in the audiobook, I’m like, ‘No, this is what it is.'”

The Shade Room recently posted footage of Haddish explaining that she was confused at certain points when reading the book as well:

Haddish’s ex appears in the comments addressing that he has no issues with Tiffany and thinks that other people were influential in how he is portrayed in the book:

“I ont [sic] want to respond to my character and my family matters in the book. At this time I will not through [sic] dirt at Tiffany or release things that I know will harm her. I actually don’t think this was all Tiffany’s doings [sic]… I think people were telling her they need to add stuff to fluff it up. I have NEVER HIT or beat a woman in my life. I’m hurting and thanks.”

If anything, this whole situation is a reminder that when it comes to reality TV, ratings, book sales and everything in between, editing and embellishing go hand and hand. Either way, we’re glad that Haddish survived whatever negativity she may have encountered in the past to become who she is today and allowing us to laugh with her and share in her authenticity.
