(NYT) — Lawmakers will introduce legislation on Tuesday, written with the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., that would significantly expand the ability of local law enforcement officials to prosecute official corruption in Albany and around the state.

The new law, which is being sponsored by State Senator Eric T. Schneiderman and Assemblyman Micah Z. Kellner, both Democrats, would make it a felony for officials to abuse their offices to benefit themselves. It would give local prosecutors a powerful new tool to bring cases against officials or lawmakers who steer public money to nonprofit agencies they secretly control or do favors for allies that do not rise to the level of criminal bribery.
