(Medill Reports) — The Illinois legislature is expected to pass a bill by the end of the week that would make it easier for employees to collect unpaid wages and could result in felony charges for employers who repeatedly withhold their workers’ pay.

The law would allow the Illinois Department of Labor to investigate cases in which workers are owed up to $3,000 in back pay and issue binding judgments ordering employers to pay up.
