(Washington Business Journal) — Statistics show the Washington area’s retail market is the strongest in the nation despite increases in this region’s retail vacancy rate since last year.

The area vacancy rate for shopping centers in the first quarter of 2010 was 5.7 percent, up 1.1 percent from the same period in 2009, according to a report released Thursday by Alexandria-based Delta Associates. That number was significantly lower than the national average of 9.5 percent.
