Though the summer’s siren song of sangria and sundress weather will likely keep you in the streets more often than not for the next few months, it’s wise to be prepared for a fun girls’ night in on a rainy (or party-less) evening! Pop a few bottles of wine, settle in with some sorbet and popcorn and share some of these classic flicks with your besties for a black girl movie marathon!

Waiting To Exhale– With a sequel on the way, it’s a great time to get re-acquainted with Bernie’s crew! Sing along with the classic soundtrack and scream at the legendary BMW fire scene all over again.

Foxy Brown-The classic Blaxplotation flick represents all that was right and wrong with the films of that era: hokey plots, stereotypical characters, pimps and gorgeous Black women kicking A$$! Don’t be surprised if you get an urge to mimic one of Pam Grier’s super fab wig looks.

Dreamgirls– The 2006 film quickly became an instant classic and we aren’t tired of it yet! Whether you love Beyonce or can’t stand her, it’s hard to resist singing along with the Dreams and James “Thunder” Early. Watching this after Jennifer Hudson’s massive weight-loss makes her new look even more incredible, btw.

Mahogany– The clothes alone made this film, but the elegance of Billie Dee Williams and Diana Ross certainly didn’t hurt either. While the plot was a little bit trite, it’s hard not to get sucked right into the fabulous tale of a young sister from the ‘hood who suddenly becomes an international supermodel.

Love Jones– One of the first in a fab series of late 90’s/early 2000’s Black romance flicks, the Nia Long and Larenz Tate led film holds a special place in the hearts of many sisters who would have gladly got their hair soaked in the rain for a man like Darius Lovehall. The movie featured a great buppie-boho crew of friends that were a lot more believable then some of the stereotypical young Black folks that we’re used to seeing on the screen.

What are your fav movies to watch with your girls?
