Paula Patton

Paula says bad acne made her seriously insecure about her looks:

“I had terrible skin all through college. I kept my hair in my face. I wouldn’t take a photo, and I couldn’t look anyone in the eye.”

And Paula’s insecurities about her looks kept her from breaking into acting until she was 28.

Mila Kunis

We’re starting to suspect that Miss Kunis might be blind. She told MTV,

“I appreciate the attention but I don’t think of myself as particularly attractive at all. I also don’t have that naturally sexual or sensuous way of behaving that some women have. I do have a pretty sharp sense of humour, though, and I think that has helped me.”

Halle Berry

We’ve lost track of how many Sexiest Woman polls Halle has topped. But she says she doesn’t believe any of them:

“Although such things do wonder for my confidence, I’m never able to take them seriously. If they really knew me, they’d realise that I’m far from secure about my looks.”

Jon Hamm

Jon must not have actually seen any episodes of Mad Men, because he recently said,

“I don’t necessarily think of myself like the handsome guy. That’s reserved for Brad Pitt and Ryan Reynolds and those guys. But it’s certainly nice when people say nice things about you, don’t get me wrong.”

Kerry Washington

When asked how she feels about being called “perfect,” Kerry said,

“I think you’re wrong! If I said to myself I’m only going to show up, or speak or be visible when I’m perfect, I would never get out of bed.”

Kerry also revealed that for a long time she was insecure about her looks:

“It took me forever to allow my makeup artist to do bright red lips! Sometimes it takes someone saying to you, ‘Do you know how beautiful your lips are? You should try wearing red lipstick.'”

But Kerry says she’s slowly learning how to see the Kerry that the rest of the world does:

“You can learn how to embrace your own unique beauty, celebrate your unique gifts and then have confidence around them.”

Olivia Wilde

Did you know that Olivia Wilde first thought that her husband Jason Sudekis wouldn’t be into her? She said,

“I thought, ‘He won’t be interested in me; I’m not a contender. He was so cool, so funny – I was such a fan of his and had always fancied his speed and his intelligence. I thought, ‘I’m not beautiful enough or his type.’”

Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle revealed her insecurities about her looks on her online blog:

“So, I was going through MAJOR low self esteem. I was a black girl in an all white school in an all white community, never feeling good enough, but always being encouraged by my parents to be bigger, badder and better. And perfect is the standard. That’s an immense amount of pressure to put on a child.

Then…I got dumped…for a light skinned girl. And then that whole thing started. My hair isn’t straight enough. My nose isn’t pointy enough. My lips are too big. My boobs aren’t big enough.

And you start going through all of that. And I realize as I’ve gotten older a lot of issues that I was dealing with at 15, I am still dealing with today.”

Johnny Depp

OK, so the world has officially gone mad. Johhny said he thinks he’s unpleasant looking.

“It’s a complete mystery for me. The attention is strange. I wake up and have to look at that head when I brush my teeth and it is often unpleasant.”

Tamera Mowry Housley

Tamera says her insecurities stem from her being a twin:

“Being a twin people compare and they compare a lot, by default: ‘Oh… She’s the sexy one or she’s the cute one. She’s the goofy one, she’s the sassy one.’

Well, I was known as the goofy cute one. And I used to read our fan mail all the time and that’s what I used to get all the time when I was 16 years old and I kept it. So going to college, I carried that. I was like “Oh, the goofy cute one. I’m not the sexy one.”

So now, to this day, honestly, when people say, “Oh you’re so cute,” there’s a part of me that goes “ugh.” I’m 36 years old, I’m a grown woman, and I have to own that I can be sexy and not only that… Honestly, I wake up every single day and I question that and it doesn’t matter. My husband can be like, “Oh my God, you look so sexy,” and I hate that I always say, “Really? Really?” So I’m going to work through that…”

Lupita Nyong’o

12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o says that she was so insecure about he looks that she prayed to God to make her skin lighter:

“I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned.

I tried to negotiate with God, I told him I would stop stealing sugar cubes at night if he gave me what I wanted, I would listen to my mother’s every word and never lose my school sweater again if he just made me a little lighter. But I guess God was unimpressed with my bargaining chips because He never listened.”

Tamar Braxton

Tamar says that behind her bravado lie insecurities about her looks because of her struggles with vitiligo.

“It’s so hard for me to talk about my insecurities so I always talk about ‘Oh I’m beat, I’m done.’ And, you know, I talk about myself and I say it out loud so I can start to believe it. And I just carry that with me only because I have a skin disease called vitiligo and it’s so crazy that nobody believes it.”

Kelly Rowland

Kelly said that she struggled with insecurities about her skin color until Beyonce’s mom Tina Knowles showed her the light.

“I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my ‘chocolatiness.’ I don’t know if that’s a word, but I didn’t embrace my chocolate lifestyle. Just being a chocolate, lovely brown skin girl and being proud of that.

I remember Tina Knowles, Bey’s mom and I remember being out in the sun and I was trying to shield myself from the sun and she said, ‘Are you crazy?’ She said ‘You are absolutely gorgeous’ and she just told me how beautiful I was and how rare chocolate is and how gorgeous the skin is, all of this stuff. And I was just like ‘Yeah!’ Like a light went off and so with that and my mother and me sitting out in the sun a little more, just to be a little more chocolate.”

We’re glad she was there to help.

Jessica Alba

Jessica says that without her makeup on, she’s one of the ugliest actresses around: “Every actress out there is more beautiful than me. All better looking than me. I’ve seen them without makeup, so I know.”

But Jess says before you role your eyes, you should know that she looked different as a child: “I was pigeon-toed, had a sway back, was slightly cross-eyed, buck-toothed and sucked my thumb.”

Well she certainly doesn’t look like that anymore.

Benedict Cumberbatch

When asked what he thought about being the highly-attractive lead of Sherlock, Benedict confessed,

“I’m still processing this strange misperception. I suppose I’ll have to find a way to deal with the strain. I enjoy being considered handsome, even though I think it’s hysterical.”

Should we tell him all that modesty makes him even more attractive?
