(Chicago Tribune) — In 2009, La Shawna Clark was in such a financial free fall that she studied for her medical boards — the most important exams of her life — by candlelight because the electricity had been turned off.  This year, she is in the final lap of medical school at University of Illinois at Chicago and is interviewing for residency programs in physical medicine and rehabilitation.  “The finish line is within sight,” she said with a touch of awe. “Last Thanksgiving I didn’t think I would make it.”  How the 33-year-old got from almost chucking it all to closing in on her M.D. is a study in perseverance.
