(U.S. News and World Report) — Tracking down campaign contributions from corporations is a tough job. A new study from the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute and the Sustainable Investment Institute finds an alarming lack of transparency when it comes to the disclosure of political campaign contributions. The vast majority (80 percent) of the companies that make up the S&P 500 have policies in place to disclose direct contributions that go straight to individual candidates. But only 14 percent of those companies have disclosure policies in place for indirect contributions, which apply to a wide range of donations that go to groups that support certain candidates or political parties, and therefore are much harder to track. Additionally, only 20 percent of corporations disclose how much is actually spent and which organizations or causes receive the funds.
