(Crain’s) — New York state’s colleges and universities helped power the state through the recession by generating an estimated $62.2 billion in economic activity last year, according to a report released Tuesday by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.
The private education sector in New York—with 167,450 jobs in 2009—was the largest in the country, some 40% bigger than second-ranked California. Nationwide, nearly one in every seven private higher education jobs are in New York.
