(Washington Business Journal) — Delinquent D.C. taxpayers coughed up only $2 million of the $170 million they owe during the first month of a rare tax amnesty period, meaning the District must collect another $18 million before the end of the month just to break even.

The Office of Tax and Revenue says it is on track to collect $20 million, the amount built into the fiscal year 2010 budget under tax amnesty, because the vast majority of amnesty payments are taken in during the last days of the event. More than 2,900 individual and business taxpayers have paid up so far, according to the Office of Tax and Revenue, roughly 7 percent of those with back bills.
