(Medill Reports) — In 1998, researchers analyzed the opinions of 340 African-Americans and Latinos on how their race was portrayed in local Chicago newscasts. Nearly two-thirds of respondents said their race or ethnic group was depicted inaccurately on the news. The tendency for television newscasts to focus on the negative rather than the positive aspects of minority communities was a frequent complaint.
