(Freep.com) — If your child was banned from a public school field trip because he or she is the wrong color, you’d be rightfully outraged. Yet that’s exactly what happened last week in Ann Arbor when Dicken Elementary School Principal Mike Madison arranged a field trip available only to black students. The black students, who were already segregated by school employees into a club called the “African-American Lunch Bunch,” were taken on a field trip to hear a talk by an African-American rocket scientist. The club and trip are part of a well meaning, but badly misguided, attempt by Madison and other school officials to help black students who are lagging academically.
