You know things haven’t been easy for Halle Berry’s movies (not Halle per se, because she stays working) when numerous publications say that her most recent film’s success is a “surprise.”

While the film Oz The Great And Powerful took number one at the box office once again with a whopping 42 million, it was The Call, the thriller starring Berry, Morris Chestnut, Abigail Breslin and David Otunga of all people (yes, Jennifer Hudson’s man) that came in at number two and raked in some big money. According to E! Online, the movie made $17.1 million over the weekend, which is a big deal seeing as it has already earned more than it took to make the film ($15 mill), and beat out the magician-themed movie The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which included huge names like Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell, and was a pretty big flop since it only made $10 million. According to Shadow And Act, Berry and Co. should feel proud because The Call played to more than 600 less theaters than The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

It’s been hard for Halle Berry as a leading lady in Hollywood. In 2003, when she made Gothika with Robert Downey Jr. post-Oscar win, that was Berry’s biggest opening at the forefront of a film. But since then, most of her movies have been on struggle mode over the years. I’m still mad at her for doing Catwoman and Movie 43 recently. But it seems that the sun has come out, and Berry is able to be a winner as a leading lady, at least this time with The Call, which has decently received by critics. I didn’t check out this particular film (eh, the plot, the trailer, the wig–they just weren’t doing it for me), but kudos to her for some big screen success!

Did you check out The Call?

Just last week we found out Oprah was adding more star power to her next chapter specials by having a chat with Jennifer Hudson, and now we’ve got a first look into the interview with the actress, singer, mother, clothing designer, and more.

As Oprah put it, J Hud is a brand in the making, and the media mogul talked to Jennifer about being the “it girl” all over again, as well as her relationship with David Otunga and whether there will actually be a wedding between the two any time soon. Jennifer also dished on motherhood and her sister joined her for the special as the two talked about the emotional trial of William Balfour and how they immediately knew he was responsible for killing their mother, brother, and nephew.

Check out this preview clip of the special which airs September 9 at 9pm. Are you looking forward to it?

Cute Kid Alert: “Dem Babies” Kick It, Erica & Lil Scrappy Hit The Red Carpet With Daughter Emani, and More!

We’re all about positively profiling adorable children in Hollywood (unlike some folks), and so in another installment of Cute Kid Alert (brought to you with the help of Black Celeb Kids!), it’s time to check out some very adorable kids and what they’ve been up to this week.

To start, why not showcase proud papa, Ne-Yo? The singer/songwriter is the father of two (Madilyn Grace Smith and Mason Evan Smith), and even though he doesn’t get to spend as much time with his babies as he would like, when he does, they get to see daddy in action! Check out the below photos of the singer with his little girl, Madilyn (aka, Maddie) who will be two in November.

In more cuteness, David Otunga, Jr. turned three recently! The little man of Jennifer Hudson and her fiance, David Otunga, took a few adorable photos before and during his b-day festivities, including one of him playing with his dad’s action figure (remember, papa David is a professional wrestler…and a lawyer on the side). Check out the cute pics!

Ha! Love this cake, and the picture. The caption for JHud’s photo said, “Happy 3rd bday boss baby!!! U r the greatest n best Blessing ever! God is so good!!!”

And how could we forget about #Dembabies, aka Moroccan and Monroe, Mariah Carey’s 15-month-old twins? She was snapped and shared photos of her alone time with the kids as they played by the pool and prepared for nap time! Adorable, much? Indeed.

Lastly, despite all the drama occurring between these two (or three if you include Mama Dee) on “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” Lil Scrappy and Erica Dixon came together with their daughter Emani for a children’s fashion show in Atlanta. They all were big smiles (including Mama Dee), and looked like a happy family. Rumors are swirling that the two are engaged now, but we’ll wait and see what happens. Or watch for that matter…

Awwwwwwwww! You better work!

Jennifer Hudson Testifies During Family’s Murder Trial

There had been questions for a while about whether Jennifer Hudson would take the stand in her family’s murder case and today she was the first witness called to testify at the start of the trial.

William Balfour, 30, the estranged husband of Jennifer’s sister, Julia, is standing trial on first-degree murder charges for killing J Hud’s mother, Darnell Donerson, her brother Jason Hudson, and 7-year-old nephew Julian King back in October 2008. Today, she told the jury she knew William wasn’t right for her sister.

“I told her over and over again to not marry him,” Jennifer said. “We did not like how he treated her.”

Jennifer reportedly became overcome with emotion at one point and shed a few tears on the stand as she told the court how she “talked to her [mother] every single day,” and described the last time the family was all together.

“It was my mother, my brother, my sister and my dog,” she said, explaining that they had paid a surprise welcome visit to her home. “I was so surprised. The whole family is here.

“That was the last time I saw them,” she said, crying. “Thank God I had the opportunity.”

Jennifer’s fiancé David Otunga was in the courtroom along with other Hudson family members for moral support. So far, the trial for William, who has plead not guilty to the charges, is expected to last four weeks.

Style to Steal or Girl, Stop: JHud Gets In Touch With Her Animal Side

Uh oh!

Look who is stepping their fashion game up big time ladies and (maybe) gentlemen! I’m all about dresses, especially fly ones with long sleeves. Can you say two-fer???

But let’s hop to it. Dodging rumors that her engagement with David “Punk” Otunga is off, the actress and singer hit up the Michael Kors Celebration of Fashion’s Night Out in Tokyo. Looking and obviously feeling very fab, Hudson stepped out in a very popular print for this fall season: leopard. She rocked it on this knee-length, long-sleeved dress that came in at the waist. While very little skin is shown in the dress, which is appropriate (we’re not hating), she still got to show off her new and improved curves and some calf action. To help display the latter, Hudson kicked up her heels in some shiny satin pumps (I think I see some red bottoms!). And alas, as the trend seems to be going, she kept her jewelry very minimal. Dang, can we get a watch or something??? As for the hair, she kept it straight and sleek, and the makeup was fun and bright. For me, this is one of the better looks I’ve seen JHud rock since she dropped her weight. She usually has a thing for very dull, solid-colored tight dresses and skirts. But this leopard number is definitely a grown and hot look for her, so I call it a Style to Steal. Do you agree?

J Hud & Hubby Split: The Cost of Her Weight Loss?

October 25th, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

** Update: Jennifer Hudson’s rep confirms that Hudson and David Otunga have not called off their engagement.**

You would have to be blind or extremely naïve to not have seen the reported split between Jennifer Hudson and fiancé David Otunga coming. The two seemed like an odd pair to me from the get go, but once comments came out about David not being too thrilled with J Hud’s new look, you had to see the proof in the low-fat pudding.

Jennifer’s comment on Jay Leno about David adjusting to her weight loss and not liking the change seemed innocent enough — except questions like “Why do you have to get all dressed up to go out” and “why can’t you just go out like you used to?” had jealous, ego-threatened boyfriend written all over them. Now that after three years together (plus a 2-year-old son, a set wedding date, a dress chosen, and ring) the two are allegedly calling it quits, you have to ask how much of a role did her weight loss play? (Because even if there is not an actual break-up, there is clearly some tension.)

I believe the saying that men get in relationships hoping the woman never changes, while women get in relationships hoping to change the man. But when the change is for the better, i.e. improved health, and the man can’t adjust, you have to wonder does he, or did he ever, have her best interest at heart?
