To Save Millions, M.T.A. Simply Asked Vendors for a Break

(New York Times) — When officials at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority asked a team of consultants for tips on how to save money, the advice was simple: just ask.

Accenture, the elite consulting firm, recommended earlier this year that the authority request concessions on existing contracts with major vendors like I.B.M. and Goodyear, a hat-in-hand attempt to cut costs as the authority stares down a $400 million budget deficit.
