I was thrilled when I learned Tyra Banks was welcoming a baby into her life. She’s been talking about having children for so long and it just seems like she would step into the work of being a mother with a nurturing heart. When she made the announcement via Instagram, posting a picture of her son’s baby cap, of course I wondered when we’d get a chance to see him.

Turns out, we wouldn’t have to wait too long…kind of.

Yesterday, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, she shared an image of she and her son York that featured his profile. We can see just enough to realize that he has his mother’s skin complexion. As a nosy person, who still believes in protecting children, I appreciated the photo.

You know Tyra’s not the only one to keep her baby’s face under wraps for a while. There are times when I forget that Kim and Kanye have a second child because we just haven’t seen li. There was that one picture of his hand grasping another but that’s it.

Kerry Washington’s daughter Isabelle is over a year old and all we’ve seen of her is a bit of her leg and hand as a caregiver was carrying her out of a hotel.

While Blue Ivy is starring in her mother’s music videos now, there was a time when her parents attempted to keep her shielded from the media and the paparazzi and people were quite mad about it.

Perhaps the man most famous for shielding his child from the public view was Michael Jackson. His son, Prince, wasn’t even known by his real name because people only referred to him as “Blanket,” the accessory that he was never seen without.

But it isn’t just celebrities.

Recently, a friend from college had a child not too long ago and for the first month, she didn’t want to show anyone pictures of her child. Which was understandable. Her baby, her life, her choice. But what was particularly annoying was the shots she’d post of the baby’s hands, blankets, toes, bibs. Perhaps I would have found that endearing except for the fact she sent out a nice-nasty message telling her family and close friends to stop asking for pictures of her child. It kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, naturally people are excited to see your child. And if you weren’t going to share pictures, why tease them with inanimate baby objects? I’m not a parent. So, I don’t know how protective I’ll feel about my child when he or she gets here. But if I don’t feel comfortable sharing pictures of my actual child right away, I won’t be uploading any taunting type images either.

But that’s just me.

For the mothers out there, when you had children, how long did you wait to share and send pictures?
