11 Spot-On Or Hella Random Recommendations For Women To Play Aaliyah
While some people think Zendaya Coleman will do good work as Aaliyah in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, “Aaliyah” was trending all last night and this morning with people upset over the movie and Coleman being cast. I’m sure you heard about the petition too. Many actually tweeted out pictures or recommended women, known and unknown, who they felt would have been a better pick. Some of the women could have been dopplegangers for the late singer, but others? Uh, some folks really tried it. Here are 11 women, both good and…interesting picks, recommended in the past and present as people who should play Aaliyah. Who would you recommend? Or are you digging Zendaya too?
The current co-host of BET’s 106 & Park was, for years, supposed to play Aaliyah in a movie about the singer’s life and was supposed to be directed by Dreamgirls director, Bill Condon. She said this in 2012 about why the movie had stalled:
“…there are people trying to create a movie and Aaliyah’s family are still mourning her loss and aren’t ready to share her story and create a film. So there’s a bit of back and forth thing with her family and with creative people. And I know that they would bless a movie being created, they’re just not 100 percent comfortable and unfortunately from my understanding they don’t have complete control of her estate. So a movie could technically be made without them green lighting it and I kind of think that’s unfortunate. So I want her family to be on board and to be happy with it. It’s still kind of lingering in the air.”
Her name was brought up as someone who should play Aaliyah in the Lifetime biopic (“The ONLY person I want to see playing Aaliyah, is Keshia Chanté! Anyone else, I’M NOT HERE FOR IT!”). She does bear a little bit of a resemblance to the singer, right?
Drake’s producer, Noah “40” Shebib, once compared Aiko’s musical stylings to that of Aaliyah (she’s definitely influenced by Aaliyah in some aspects), and someone else claimed that Aiko, the previously mentioned Chante, and even Cassie could pull of Aaliyah’s look: “I think Keisha Chanté, Jhene Aiko or Cassie would be great choices.” I would have to disagree on that though, as aside from being small and the hair (though Aiko cut hers into a bob recently) , the women don’t look very similar. That’s just me though!
As it was put on Twitter, “Lolita Price looks so much like Aaliyah.” I agree with that actually. I think the biggest thing is the eyes and lips, and if you check out Price’s Instagram page, you might freak out from time to time at the similarities. Price, an actress, did post this statement on her Instagram page today, alluding out to missing out on the role of Aaliyah:
“I have no control over the things that I put my energy toward, meaning their outcome, but I can control whether or not I will smile or cry, laugh or pout, enjoy my moment or curse it. I choose to be happy for the things I have not yet discovered in my craft or about myself. The world does not hold your hand through the journey of self discovery and through my journey up until this point I have made significant strides as a human being. Today has just proven that to me. I am not sad, I am not angry. I am happy for the next thing I get to exert my energy towards. That is what life is about. You get up, dust yourself off, and try again ;-)”Follow
“Why didn’t they get Timbaland’s wife to play Aaliyah….since…you know…they favor.”
There was always the old-school rumor that the producer claimed he was attracted to his wife, Monique, because she looked like Aaliyah. And he did say in an E! True Hollywood Story episode that he was in love with Aaliyah at one time: “When I first met Aaliyah — it’s time for the world to hear this, I’m gonna give a little secret — I was in love with her. I said, ‘She [is] just a baby, I’m old. I’m just gonna be her brother.’ Oh man, I was fightin’, I was fightin’ a lot — a big war. But I loved Aaliyah.”
But back to the topic at hand…While Monique looks a little like the singer, I couldn’t see anyone ringing her phone to ask her to bust a move as Baby Girl. No offense though, because she’s quite pretty!
“Who do I need to bother about the Aaliyah biopic? Who? Its either Sabi plays Aaliyah or no movie at all !”
Another possible doppleganger! So much so that different publications have referred to Sabi, a singer, as “Aaliyah Lookalike Sabi,” while another asked, “Is Sabi the Reincarnation of Aaliyah?” Uh, no. But she does bear a real resemblance to the late singer.
Again, having light skin and long hair doesn’t necessarily make you the perfect fit, but someone thought Cassie could pull off the role: “Zendaya playing Aaliyah ? No, not at all. If anybody should play Aaliyah I think Mya or Cassie should.” Coincidentally, some people feel that Zendaya looks like a younger version of Cassie! But does Cassie look like Aaliyah?
There was a false rumor not too long ago that Solange actually claimed to have been picked to play Aaliyah in a biopic. But that doesn’t mean that some people didn’t think she would have been a good choice. This was said on Twitter early this morning:
“Okay so Zendaya is playing Aaliyah I guess I so it but I do think Solange was a much better fit I’m just saying”
“Tbh she’s not that good of a singer but I feel like solange would do a better job playing Aaliyah”
I think it’s the lashes, eyebrows and the smile, but otherwise, I don’t see it.
“In a pinch Bria Murphy coulda played Aaliyah.”
There was a rumor going around in April that Eddie Murphy’s daughter, Bria Murphy, was on the short list of names of young women being looked at to try and fill Aaliyah’s shoes for the biopic role (hey, maybe she might pop up in the Vh1 movie if they’re still doing it). I see a similarity, maybe in the eyes, but again, I don’t know if she would have been a good choice.
The former protege of Fatima Robinson who used to dance for the likes of Ciara, and be in music videos with Chris Brown and Usher, is also an actress who took quite a few pictures dressed up in Aaliyah-like garb (which can be found on her old MySpace page and were said to be audition pictures). Some felt that she did look a little similar to the singer, and she also said that Aaliyah was her idol. But while the bang and sunglasses are cute, Coleman is a better choice.
“I think zendaya is a great fit for the Aaliyah movie, honestly who else could play Aaliyah? Besides maybe keke Palmer.”
What is Keke Palmer’s dream role? That’s right, to play Aaliyah. At least, that’s what she told Bossip. But the beauty and upcoming talk show host does believe that Coleman is a great choice for the Lifetime biopic, saying on Twitter today, “Ppl kill me attacking folks! Zendaya is perfect for Aaliyah. Quit playin’.”
“Someone like Meagan Good would have played the roll of Aaliyah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.”
Like Palmer, Good always wanted to play Aaliyah in a biopic on the singer’s life. But she recently told VIBE that she feels like now, she’s too old for such a role and that someone age 16-22 would be a good fit. But a few people said she should have been given a shot. Good is good people (pun intended), but I don’t see it!
