“I Don’t Need To Hide Anymore”: Jazmine Sullivan Tells Us Why She Left Music, Why She’s Back, And Why She’s Happier Than Ever

May 15, 2014  |

The last time many people heard from singer Jazmine Sullivan, she had put out her second album in 2010, Love Me Back, had everyone jamming to her song “10 Seconds,” and her voice was all over the radio. But in the midst of all that, she was quite unhappy. By January 2011, she needed a break from the demands of the industry, breaking the heart of fans with her Twitter announcement:

“i’m making an official announcement that i am taking a break from music … i’m trying to figure out who i am … w/out a mike, paper or pen. i promised myself when it wasn’t fun anymore i wouldn’t do it. and here i am.”

Now May of 2014, Sullivan hasn’t put out new music of her own in three years, but after doing some soul searching, restoring her relationship with God, and working on loving herself, she’s says “now I feel like I’m ready.”

We spoke with her about her new album, Reality Show, her new drum-heavy jam, “Dumb,” what she did during her break, and why she thinks things will be different this time around. We’re oh so glad to have her back in our ears.

Only time shall tell April. She was very talented, and super underrated voice-wise.

    She looks great!!!

  • lea

Love her, glad she’s back. Jaz, you are a true talent so don’t compromise yourself. The music industry is full of predators.

  • mreric55

She can definitely sing but if she wants staying power today’s image conscious music business she should try to get herself more fit. I love her voice though. But it was a reason why Martha Wash, who could sing circles around alot of the industry and was on some hit songs in the early 90s, never had a great solo career and didn’t appear in those videos on her hit songs.

  • Legendary Trolly

The truth is, she probably had to vanish due to the label putting her on the shelf. We know how the game goes. You vanish to “get yourself together” and come back a few years later making excuses. Nonetheless, Im excited for her new stuff.

    • April Harris

true. and probably got dragged through any and everything in that industry. They make you pay your dues in bad ways.

      • Legendary Trolly

I was thinking flopping album held her back.

  • Entertainmentluvva

    yes Jazmine !

  • Christan-Joy Demeritt

I still listen to her albums, she’s the truth!

  • randomcommenter

it’s nice that she put God first but is she coming out with a gospel song or regular wordly R&B lol im confused….and any case i’ve missed her

    • Lost Soul

The article said: “She’s not even ruling out the idea of doing a gospel album somewhere
down the line (“It’s possible. I got some more years of sinning left

I think she’s saying if she does a gospel album, it would be a few years from now. (I could be wrong.)

      • randomcommenter

ok well yeah thanks makes sense

    • CaribbeanGlow

I was confused about how after she mentioned the importance of keeping God first, she cites her reason a gospel album may or may not be in the cards for her… She plans on sinning a few more years.

      • randomcommenter

lmao we are all sinners as far im concerned so i wont be judging whatever decision she makes just as long as she sings quality songs

        • CaribbeanGlow

We’re all sinners, but we are supposed to be aiming not to sin, not planning on it for a few more years as some “given” of youth.

          • randomcommenter

it also doesnt help to judge just hope and pray she finds her way we are not perfect

            • CaribbeanGlow

Okay so I guess it doesn’t matter whether it’s gospel or R&B then.

  • Voice of Reason

Glad to see my girl back. She has a powerful voice that needs to be heard. It sucks that mediocre folks such as Rihanna and the like can be global stars while other talented singers cannot get much love because they aren’t skinny/light skinned/ weaved up to their butts…

    • Guest

Why do you have to drag others down to uplift another?

      • Voice of Reason

Because I felt like it. Mediocre is mediocre. I call a spade a spade.

        • Renee j

To you, apparently the world thinks otherwise. Jazmine sullivan is a SANGER, but rihanna and the rest are ‘performers’, meaning their voices aren’t all that, but they make catchy songs and keep you entertained while they’re on the stage. Different strokes for different folks. I don’t think it has anything to do with long weave or any of that.

          • Voice of Reason

Exactly. We are allowed to have differing opinions and thoughts. I prefer to hear someone that can really blow as opposed to a mediocre singer who can ‘perform’ really well. When I download a tune to my device or buy an album I need substance, not catchy fluff that is crowding the radios today. I could care less if the rest of the world likes that. I am my own person and I like what I like. Crazy costumes, couture gowns and weaves are all a part of the persona. I don’t care about any of that. What are you singing about? What are you saying…your message? That means something to me.

  • Otis Django

Not like she was selling any albums. Another SOLANGE.

Her 1st one went gold but that 2nd one bombed

      • Entertainmentluvva

        that’s the real tea lol

    • New

Have you heard this woman sing? She can sing circles around bey/rih/Adele she just isn’t marketable because she isn’t skinny/cute… But if the industry was like it used to be way back I’m Aretha’s day she would have been bigger than all the current pop stars

      • The truth

        She’s beautiful.

        • lea

She is very beautiful and has an amazing voice!!!

      • Stacey

I disagree, I think she is very cute. She is marketable to a loyal fanbase. Gays and women are very loyal, and that’s where she should aim.

        • New

She doesn’t have stage presence (watch her recent concerts) voice= incredible, dancing= mediocre and she needs to be trained more or something about owning the stage. I think she needs to get fit and healthy and work with a better stylist, and then I believe she will unstoppably conquer the rest of the world

          • Afrinaturality

Total rubbish. She performed in London les than two months ago. I was there. She commanded the stage, showed her vulnerability and was very engaging. Jazmine deserves every success.

            • New

To each their own, personally I think her dancing needs work. But I can appreciate it may have been better for you live. Maybe I’m just nit-picking or perhaps that’s the reason this highly talented individual isn’t as big as she should be?

For instance when she sang “holding your down” I felt vocally she was on point, but she could have done more with the stage and dancing especially with that beat. I felt like she was relying a lil too heavily on her backup dancers, again I think I see it that way because I’ve worked with artists before.

      • empresstala

Adele isn’t skinny/cute and she can’t dress either, she just has a better team promoting her

        • CaribbeanGlow

She’s white. White people found their “soul” singer. That’s why they put her everywhere and liked her so much.

        • New

I hear ya, but we all know Adele is wh!te. When you’re black you gotta be 20/10 every.single.time, for wh!tes the standards dropped or reevaluated. Adele don’t have isht on Jazzie but her lack of pigmentation.

      • YM

        Better than Adele tho?

    • randomcommenter

ewwww her vocal range and talent beyond Solange lol sorry that u feel that way…..she even writes songs for Solange’s sister lol

      • Entertainmentluvva

what song did she write for Beyonce ??? im waiting

I hope she can make a decent comeback

  • Guestest

    Well good for you Jazmine!

  • Momma Dee Tha Q.U.E.E.N
