Rich And Tacky: 15 Celebrities Whose Money Sure Ain’t Bought Them Much Fashion Sense
Like most of us, celebrities make poor fashion choices from time to time. But unlike most of us, celebrities have deep enough pockets to not only purchase the best clothes, but pay stylists to tell them exactly what the best clothes are. So why is it that some stars make fashion mistakes over and over, year after year? We have no clue. But what we do know are fifteen examples of high-paid stars that have made a habit of making worst dressed lists, despite having the means not to.
Lil’ Kim’s face and body may have changed drastically over the years, but her tacky styling remains the same. The rapper has worn outfits, hair, and makeup that were ill-fitting, inappropriate and excessive, against all better judgment (that it must be assumed someone on her styling team has) since her rise to fame in the mid-90’s. Lil’ Kim is a legend, but equally so are her terrible fashion choices – remember the purple boob-out jumpsuit?
With an estimated net worth of $90 million, and a seasonal salary of $10 million thanks to “The Voice,” there’s no reason why Christina Aguilera must always look so tacky. From her multicolor weaves to her ill-fitting ensembles, to her inappropriate accessories; those of us who watch The Voice every Monday and Tuesday get an eyeful. The singer has never been a candidate for the title “fashion icon,” but in her many years of being in the spotlight, it would be expected that she have a more polished image.
Tamar Braxton is fabulous, but not consistently… and not always from head to toe. Since the debut of Braxton Family Values, the star’s styling choices have generally been in the cute/chic range. So why, despite having a rich, music producer husband whose wealth she loves to flaunt, has the diva promenaded down the Red Carpet – more than once – wearing a tacky ensemble and/or poorly concealed lace front? Get your life Tamar!
When Busta Rhymes ditched his dreads, many thought it would be the start of a fresher, sexier rap star image – but that’s not always been the case. Although the Flipmode Squad founder has stepped out looking dapper on more than one occasion, he’s probably stepped out looking tacky more than that. Which makes no sense. With an estimated net worth of $60 million, the words “Busta,” “Rhymes” and “tacky” should never be mentioned in the same sentence.
There’s artistic fashion and there’s not– Nicki Minaj’s choice of dress has largely not been considered artistic fashion. We’ve seen the rap diva rock furry boots, red capes, leopard body suits and cotton candy colored coiffures; and while there’s no doubting that the price of such items is high, must they be presented so tackily? Furthermore, can’t she find neon-colored outfits that are better-fitting? And doesn’t she get sick of seeing herself on worst dressed lists, or is that a personal goal? We all understand that Nicki Minaj is an entertainer, but honestly, if Barbie (the doll) had an opinion, we doubt she’d be caught dead in half of the outfits Nicki strolls down the Red Carpet in.
You’d think Britney Spears’ return to television on a prime-time show like The X Factor would warrant the purchase of a killer weave, but apparently not. From episode one, her visible tracks and poorly matched extension pieces left many of us wondering, “Why?” The pop superstar can certainly afford any number of stylists or hair weaves, so what exactly is the reason for her tress transgressions? To be fair, her hairstyles have become more polished since the live X Factor episodes have begun.
Award-winning actress Viola Davis is talented and beautiful. So why is it that she chooses to wear dresses that are unflattering around her breasts to major Hollywood events – or anywhere else for that matter? Viola’s fame and fortune affords her the ability to choose from a wide-range of dresses by designers who could easily send as many seamstresses as necessary to ensure that her cleavage is perfect. It’s quite unfortunate because were it not for the bunched up boobs, most of her looks would be pretty fabulous.
Monica has sung the songs we love for over a decade; some of her greatest hits being “Don’t Take it Personal” (1995), “The Boy is Mine” (1998) and “So Gone” (2003). The singer has won Grammy’s, Billboard Music and BET Awards in addition to being nominated for countless others. But though the R&B songstress is no stranger to the spotlight, she often steps out in threads that she should probably know better than to wear. We’ve loved many of Monica’s looks, but we’ve hated many as well.
Will.i.am is definitely no stranger to worst dressed lists, and there’s a good reason for that. The Black Eyed Peas front man has donned fanged caps, red vests, and neon-framed sunglasses with cool confidence and tacky swag. When not shocking everyone with his often over-the-top looks on Red Carpets, he’s stepping out on the streets in shabbier, more subdued looks – that are still tacky. To be fair, not all of Will.i.am’s styling choices are horrid, but at least one of them has been referred to as a “fashion disaster.”
Nene Leakes may once have taken to the pole to support she and her son, but now that she’s cashing “Donald Trump checks” it would seem that she could afford a stylist to suggest that she change her blond ‘do. It’s not like her hairstyles were always tacky: four years ago she made her reality TV debut wearing a mid-length brown weave that was very cute. By the second season, she had ditched her long locks for brown cropped tresses that were also quite chic. But by season 3, Nene’s hair-styling choice had taken a disastrously tacky turn: remember that two-tone cropped look? It wasn’t long before Nene adopted the style that she’s been flaunting for two years now. We guess that in her case, fame and money had a negative effect on her fashion sense.
Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi may have entered the Jersey Shore house a New Jersey Guidette of modest upbringing and questionable style, but now that she’s amassed a fortune upwards of $4 million, we’d expect more responsible fashion choices. Don’t misunderstand, there’s nothing wrong with animal prints, neon colors and dark tans; but when combined poorly, the three can easily make for a tacky overall appearance.
We’ve been rooting for the Williams sisters’ athletic success on the tennis court and fashion success everywhere else since the two were in beaded braids. But though their athletic success has been undeniable, their chicness on the Red Carpet has been hit-or-miss – Venus’ more so than Serena’s. The tennis star has emerged looking fabulous many times, but still seems to struggle with picking the best fashions and styles that are right for her. Which is unfortunate given that the athlete has raked in $28 million in prize money and much more in endorsement deals.
Everyone knows Coco’s outrageous style choices are made on purpose, but many of us still can’t help but wonder why. It’s not like her larger than life assets could be fully concealed in regular clothing anyway. Admittedly, some of Coco’s outfits are cute, and she does rock everything she wears with unwavering confidence. Regardless, she continues to opt for the tackiest of ensembles – and we have a feeling her husband Ice-T doesn’t complain.
Mary J. Blige
Mary J. Blige has come a long way, but may have longer to go given many of her style choices. It’s not that the Queen of R&B always looks terrible – when she looks good, she looks great! – but just that a few fashion faux pas are hard to forget. There was the gold tooth that she’s since disposed of; the blunt bangs that needed softening; and the platinum blonde hair that’s revived from time to time.
