Mayor Bloomberg: You Can’t Use Food Stamps to Buy Soda!

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg sought federal permission on Wednesday to bar New York City’s 1.7 million recipients of food stamps from using them to buy soda or other sugared drinks.
The request, made to the United States Department of Agriculture, which finances and sets the rules for the food-stamp program, is part of an aggressive anti-obesity push by the mayor that has also included advertisements, stricter rules on food sold in schools and an unsuccessful attempt to have the state impose a tax on the sugared drinks.

@Dawn, lmao. So true. I believe mayor bloomberg is a jackass. People are fat because they want to be. Does he really think his little ban is going to solve anything? Smh

  • Dawn

Okay, so I can buy a bag of sugar and make kool-aid, but I can't buy soda?

@Dimples 87, its not their money. Its our money. All programs have rules, if you don’t want to be told what to do don’t participate. The food stamp is a voluntary program, no one forces families to enroll! By the way, this is a great idea and they should limit junk foods and candies. I used to work for a public health program, and I saw so many children under the age of 3 getting cavities filled or teeth pulled because they drink juice, hugs, and soda all day long!!

They use those cards at the casino? They buy liquor and cigarellos too.

    STFU Bloomberg.

90% of the food stamp program purchases SHOULD be setup just like the WIC program whereby you are told exactly what to buy. Twenty-five y/o "TooMeeka" and her six kids are always in the grocery store with each of them are carrying their own box OR two of cereal under their arms while "*baby-daddy-#7" pushes the cart filled with shrimp and steak. *Not to mention, he'll be gone as soon as the food is gone or the baby comes…which ever happens first!

Please take a peak at the visual summary that Lindsay Roffe did of this article. It really highlights the key messages of the story.

Thank you for bringing this issue to public attention!

I may not be looking at the bigger picture but I agree I think alot of ppl who have food stamps buy more bs than food. And alot of those children are over weight. My family has never been on foodstamps but my mom and dad told us we were poor. lol we couldn't eat whitebread, never eaton pork, never drank soda, ate candy, we did drink kool aid I never liked it to this day. I think its a good look to stop the kool laid and soda, but fruit juice is going a lil to far cause all juices have more sugar than juice than consumer can't help that. But I say ban candy, soda, and that bs suga water

I personally don't think it's Mayor Bloomberg's role to tell people how to spend the way they support their family. I, of course, applaud him for trying to make his city healthier but you can't dictate how someone should take care of their own family. It's not right and it shouldn't be done, plain and simple.

That sounds so Ignorant. You don't have the right to tell someone what they are allowed to buy. Who do they think is on food stamps? In case you forgot Grown people not kids. This Mayor need to step off and find more serious issues in the city to deal with, besides telling someone what they can and cannot buy with Food stamps.
