We’re Listening! Oprah’s Mane Man Andre Walker Discusses The 10 Hair Products Every Woman Should Own

When the cover of the September issue of O! magazine arrived in my inbox, my initial reaction to the ‘makeover’ issue was that Oprah looked like her usual gorgeous self. However, social media and the natural hair blogging community were buzzing with mixed emotions about whether Oprah’s hair was actually in its au naturale state.

So I set out to get the final word from Lady O’s longtime hairstylist Andre Walker. After seeing the topic covered extensively by Madame Noire and the rest of the blogosphere, I decided to talk to him about more pressing (no pun intended) issues than Oprah’s braid-out.

Like the current state of my at-home beauty closet and the fact that I (like many of you) am probably buying all of the wrong products to take care of my hair. After talking with Andre about the must-have hair care products women should have at home, I discovered I was right because I only own 3 out of the 10 things he mentioned. Check out Walker’s recommendations and see if your at-home beauty product game is up to par?

He never gets her edges right. Hair all bouncy & shiny, yet he never smooths her edges. I use virgin hair lacquer for mine.

I cosign 100% with the Knot Today leave in conditioner, that is the only product I have tried and used the whole bottle, twice may I add. I don’t get the dry shampoo bit, why add something to your hair to tie you over? A good shampoo and conditioner always leaves your hair looking and feeling much better no matter if your relaxed or natural.

I think it’s important to pay attention to the ingredients in the products we use for our hair. As another poster has said I too was not impressed with Miss Jessie’s products and it has some ingredients in it that are drying and not good for your hair, so not worth the price. Have not tried Carol”s Daughter and Shea Moisture was ok. I do use organic shampoo’s and conditioners and hot-oil treatments and masks. The whole argan oil craze is up in the air cause I am still trying to see if it really makes a big difference as some of those products can get quite expensive and if can’t see or feel an immediate difference then it’s not worth my money.

The detangling comb and the boar bristle brush was like hair 101, a no brainer, otherwise the list was so-so more like a product endorsement for his own line.

Thanks for this article. It’s great to have another black owned business to support who seems to have quality products. I’m currently in the process of growing out my relaxed hair & I think this list is a good start on products I can use between visits, especially since I’m clueless when it comes to hair care.

Ive seen what he’s done for Oprah (Chris Rock running his hands through her hair), so I’m definitely going to try it out.

He has done a great job maintaining and growing Oprahs hair. This list only list his products and features items suggested by MN I have never heard of!

Are you going to research the products that were listed?

  • TraceFace

I wasn’t too impressed with this list. Especially with the comment: “The less you wash your hair the better”. That is simply untrue. We have to make sure our hair and scalp are always clean. Many hair stylists agree as well. The problem is that most shampoos dry out our hair, but that can be simply solved with a Sulfate Free, Paraben free, and SLS free shampoo. Jane Carter and Carol’s Daughter are two of the many companies that sell these products. I did notice that he mentioned Carol’s Daughter’s shampoo. I will comment that I do use the Kinky Kurly Detangler. It is truly the best! A good boar brush like Denman is a good suggestion, as well as the wide tooth comb. But I think its important to educate ourselves on our hair. Whether your Relaxed or Natural, you need to decide what’s best for your hair. As a natural, everyone kept telling me to use Miss Jessie’s products, Carol Daughter’s products, and Shea Moisture products. They didn’t work for me and I didn’t like how they made my hair feel. But, after some research, including finding the key ingredients that I want in my products, I feel satisfied that I’m taking care of my hair.

The hair mask is a good suggestion too! I don’t know about that particular brand, but I think it was good suggestion for people that didn’t already know about it.

Good comment and what you said is really true…..i.e., always make sure that hair and scalp are always clean!!!!!

Good comment. I definitely think you and he are on the same page about washing your hair it’s just that he didn’t have space to elaborate on what he meant.

Each of the products which he listed are excellant for keeping hair moisturized and healthy. This is a really good list. He did not only list his brands products, but he listed other quality products in the list.

I agree. I have never really like this guy as a stylist and Im not sure I would take his advice on anything hair related. And I am gonna say this….Oprah’s hair looked a hot mess on that cover…YES I SAID IT!
