“There’s Nothing Weird About It:” Tracee Ellis Ross Explains Why She Left BET

So why did Tracee Ross decided to leave Reed Between the Lines? It turns out, it was just bad timing. The actress told Essence Magazine:

“It was that BET hadn’t decided if they were picking up the show yet or not,” says Ross. “During that time when they didn’t know, I was offered a really amazing pilot for NBC, and BET graciously allowed me to go and do it.”

Ross says from there things got tricky. “Then the timing got complicated and there was a need to move forward. [BET] had to figure out how to deal without me because I wasn’t available. But it’s not because I wanted to leave.”

The natural-haired maven tells us that things happen for a reason. Despite the casting changes and the fact that the NBC pilot she filmed was not picked up, she appears to be in good spirits. “I love Reed Between the Lines, I believe in it. There is a chance I’ll go back, always. There’s nothing weird about it.”

We can’t blame her for jumping at the chance to do a show on NBC. It’s just too bad that show didn’t get picked up and she’d already quit BET. All anyone can do though is make the best decision he/she has with the information available at the time. Something else will come up for her, for sure. “Reed Between The Line” second season begins in July, and they’ve re-written the story to say that Carla moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career and Alex stayed behind with the children in Atlanta.

Do you think they should write her back into the show?

They just need to steal a page from the book of Roseanne (The Great Becky Switch) and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (The Great Aunt Viv Switch). Just switch up the actresses and when she’s ready to come back, let her come back.

She looks like her momma, Ms. Diana Ross, In this picture. I miss her! I wish she and her mom would do a variety show.

Why are black shows in the 2010s so very BAD??

  • Bring Carla back

They need to write her back into the script. Carla’s character would not have left her family behind for a career.

I agree. No mother would leave her kids behind, she’d find a way to follow her dream without leaving her kids or her husband

Oh wow, ‘Reed Between The Lines’ without Tracee is NOT going to make it! Sorry! I just wish they would bring ‘Girlfriends’ back…fa realz, or at least make a movie! To me, ‘Reed Between The LInes’ was just “okay”. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll watch it without Tracee on there! Maybe she’ll decide to come back if nothing else comes her way. On another note, this picture of her working this hat is just all kinds of fabulous! You betta werkkkk Tracee!!!

They should write her back in… it’s not her fault BET was unsure about Reed…

She is so pretty and I love the way she dresses.

How many ” natural-haired mavens ” has NBC had in the past? Better get in where you fit in…….

I watched one episode of the show and it was nowhere near as good as it was made out to be. I don’t understand that new storyline they’re working with; two of the kids are Carla’s from her first marriage. Why would she leave them behind?

    • JusBabGirl

I agree with your second statement, but how can you watch one episode and know whether the show is good or not? Did you watch the rest of the season?

  • olivia

If “Reed” isn’t coming back until 2013, don’t they have plenty of time to re-work the story line and add her back?

Not that I watch this train wreck…but maybe some re-tooling will help.

    • Cat88L3

I was thinking that as well…I heard the show won’t be back until July 2013! I think that’s plenty of time to rework the storyline. Maybe she’s thinking what we are all thinking. The majority of people don’t like the show. I think this is her way of bowing out gracefully.

      • olivia

She was being politically correct…for sure

      • JusBabGirl

If people didn’t like the show, it wouldn’t be coming on for another season.

  • NONEYA

I wish her the best…but look how long she was out of work between Girlfriends n Reed….it maybe yrs before she finds work….

  • TRUTH IS

Bring back Girlfriends, with Toni :(

    • cleojones
