Know Your Shape: The Best Hair Cuts For Every Face

July 16th, 2012 - By Tiffany Washington

Choosing the right haircut can be hard. There’s always that risk you take that you’ll hate it and have to let it grow out over the course of a few months. No one wants that. That’s why we’ve put together this handy little guide to the best cut for every face shape:

Round

If your face is round, meaning that the length and width are the same, most cuts that are at least chin length, but ideally longer, will frame rounder face shapes well.  To slenderize the face a few long, choppy layers on straight hair will definitely do the trick. A bit of wave also elongates and gives it some angle. Try a large barreled curling iron to create gentle bumps in big sections. It’s also easy to create this look heat-free. Just make 6-8 large braids with wet hair, keep in overnight and in the morning you’ll have glorious waves.

OMG! find there are cuts in here for everyone relaxed or natural. Read what it says and compare your face shape and take it from there. Don’t always try to find the negative in something. If u have a triangle face follow that example if you have a diamond shaped face follow that example or just do what you like for yourself. Don’t think because you wear your hair natural everyone have to tip toe around you. Its just a choice you are making. I love natural hair, it just the women who wear them some of the women at least behave if they are doing something better than anyone else. Kinda like when you talked to a vegetarian they behave as if they are better than someone who eat meat. Now go back and find your face shape and take it from there.

If you give two people the same haircut and they have two different textures, most of the time it wont look like the same cut. Looking at the face shapes and “taking it from there” is not a one size fits all option. I suppose this article is great for those with straight hair (or long hair if you’re copying Kelly’s look) but for folks with more curl it borders on a fail unless you flat iron religiously and live in 0% humidity. Its not about one option being better than the other–all you have to do is imagine all those haircuts on tightly coiled hair to understand there’s a difference that should be addressed.

I’m diamond shaped. I actually had the cut that Kerry has in the picture. Now I rock a long Aaliyah cut. I actually wish I could chop all my hair off and wear it short but my cheekbones are too high- sigh!

I really don’t think Halle is an oval she’s more of a square face. It’s more noticable as she ages. Beyonce is a great example of an oval face. That chin length curly bob Halle wore months back did not flatter her much. I’m glad she got rid of it. Oval face shapes can get away with any hair style. Short pixy cuts or past chin length looks with not too many layers look best on square faces.
I’m glad they distinguished the difference between a diamond and a long face shape instead of clumping both together like most stylists do.

Good article but it would be really useful if you did one for natural hairstyles.
