As we find ourselves getting closer to the end of 2011 let’s take a look down memory lane and appreciate some of the best celebrity scandals this year had to offer. Hollywood was on some type of scandal booster this year with celebs getting pulled over, arrested, being offensive and so much more.
Check out our top 10 scandals of this year, and let us know what shocked you the most?
Quintessential bachelor Hugh Hefner, 85, surprised the world when he proposed to Playboy Playmate Crystal Harris last Christmas. Turns out, she had an even bigger surprise in store for Hef. Harris, 25, left the Playboy mogul high and dry just days before their wedding in June. To add insult to injury, she went on a media tour and made fun of her sex life with Hefner on Howard Stern’s radio show. “After all is said and done, staying single is probably for the best. I think I just missed a bullet,” Hefner wrote on Twitter. The eternal playboy bounced back quickly, replacing Harris with two new girlfriends and slapping a “Runaway Bride” sticker on Harris’s awkwardly timed Playboy cover.
Celebrity scandal and computer hacking intersected in 2011, when nude or revealing photos of Scarlett Johnson, Blake Lively, Mila Kunis and Jennifer Lopez appeared on the Web. “If you send a naked photo of yourself to a website or to anyone, then you’re asking for it to be published. No one needs to send naked pictures. Just when you see that person, get naked and show them,” cracked comedian and TV host Chelsea Handler.
Lindsay Lohan continued her string of scandalous years. In February, she was convicted of misdemeanor theft for stealing a necklace from a store, an offense that also constituted a violation of her probation from previous convictions. While under house arrest, Lohan failed a random alcohol test, but her judge decided it was not a probation violation. In October, a judge revoked Lohan’s probation on the basis of failure to comply with her probation terms, sending Lohan back to jail unless she posted bail of $100,000, which she did. “Lindsay Lohan kind of melted down, but she melted down that way last year,” Current TV host Brett Erlich said. “She’s had so many bad years in a row, she’s going to have to stop calling them bad years, she’s just going to have to rephrase and say, ‘These are years.'” Then, in November, she spent around 5 hours in jail before being released thanks to overcrowding. In December, her Playboy pictorial came out, and broke newstand records. Looks like she’s trying to end the year on a high note?
“To be clear, the picture was of me and I sent it.” So ended the Anthony Weiner scandal, which resulted from lewd photos of himself. Weiner, a congressman from New York, sent via Twitter to six women. He had denied it initially, but it ultimately caused him to resign from Congress, saying he cannot continue in office amid the intense controversy surrounding sexually explicit messages he sent online to several women. “He was much more himself on Twitter than anyone would advise a public figure to be,” said Toure, author of “Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness.” “Twitter is just a microphone that allows you to say whatever you want, to whoever wants to listen. So, you know, it doesn’t make you stupid, it just amplifies the potential to be stupid. And so you say stupid things, and there you are.”
In the petition filed Friday, December 16, Vanessa Bryant cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce. In what appears to be an effort to keep the details of their split out of the public eye, the couple said in a joint statement late Friday that they had “resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately.” However, these days no details are left out of the public eye. Allegedly, Vanessa Bryant is accusing her soon to be ex husband Kobe Bryant of sleeping with at least 105 women over their 10 and a half year marriage! The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement, and if true, Vanessa would be entitled to half of their community property. Thatta girl!
Jerry Sandusky served as assistant coach of Penn State’s football team for thirty years, and it was there, say his victims, that he sexually abused more than 40 children. Though he retired in 1999, his alleged victims have just now begun stepping forward, accusing Sandusky of molesting them, and holding head coach Joe Paterno and his staff complicit for doing nothing to stop him. In November, Sandusky was indicted on 40 counts of sex crimes against young boys, following a more than three-year investigation. During an interview with Brian Williams, Sandusky admitted that he “enjoy[ed] young people” but denied being sexually attracted to them. His trial is set for January.
The image of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a movie star, former governor of California, and husband to Maria Shriver took a major hit when it was revealed he had an affair and a child with a former housekeeper, Mildred Baena, 14 years earlier. In May, Shriver moved out of their home and later filed for divorce. “It was a heartbreaking tale, especially to see Maria, someone who had been standing by her husband’s side, all these years,” said Jen Garcia, assistant editor at People magazine.
“As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life,” Moore told news services in November of this year regarding her decision to split with younger man Kutcher. In September, it was alleged that Kutcher had cheated on Moore with Sara Leal while he was in San Diego. He denied the accusation. However, moving vans were spotted at the couple’s home in October, leading to speculation that the couple was splitting. The pair was spotted at Bruce Willis’s vacation home earlier in November, supposedly working on their marriage. Kutcher and Moore were married in 2005; she was 43 years old, while he was 27 at the time. The woman at the center of Ashton Kutcher’s alleged affair has given her first interviews. Sara Leal, 22, has spoken out to both Us Weekly and the UK’s The Sun newspaper, claiming she had sex with Demi Moore’s husband on the stars’ sixth wedding anniversary.
Kim Kardashian’s wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries was one of the social events of the year. Months of anticipation and media coverage led up to the big event. But three weeks after the premiere of her four-hour E! Wedding Special, Kim filed for divorce. Was the whole thing a publicity stunt? Kim emphatically denies it, telling Glamour that she just got carried away. “I believe in love and the dream of having a perfect relationship, but my idea of it has changed,” she says of her 72-day marriage, which unraveled before the cameras on her E! reality show Kourtney & Kim Take New York. “I think I need to not live in a fairy tale like that. I think I maybe need to just snap out of it and be a little more realistic.”
Former “Two and a Half Men” star Charlie Sheen entered drug rehab in January, leading CBS to put “Two and a Half Men” on hiatus. In February, Sheen criticized the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, on the radio program “Alex Jones Show.” CBS then announced it had canceled the rest of the season. Sheen threatened to sue CBS for breach of contract and began a much-discussed string of media appearances to explain himself, and state he was “winning.” The uncertainty over “Two and a Half Men” ended when CBS hired Ashton Kutcher to take Sheen’s place as co-star of the show.
