Great people manifest around us often, but the dedication, devotion, and courage it takes to fill the shoes of a single of mother is unfathomable. It’s a reality that can’t be explained. You would have to experience it, like Sakinah Sanders has…

Born and raised in Harlem, holding a bachelor’s degree from SUNY New Paltz in Public Relations and a master’s degree from Binghamton University in Social Science, Sakinah Sanders lives to fulfill her dreams and strives to inspire and be the best role model for her little girl. We took our chances in hopes of catching a glimpse of the true spirit of a driven single mother.

Real Name: Sakinah Sanders

Alter Ego: ‘Kinah’ or just ‘mommy’

Locale: Brooklyn, New York by way of Harlem, New York

Ordinary Role: Team Assistant for Ad Sales and Research at Cartoon Network and Adult Swim

Secret Powers: I have a hard exterior but am super mushy on the inside. I do any and everything for the people I love. I’m a people pleaser.

Incognito Aesthetic: My curves. I’m not a skinny little person and I’m happy with it!

Superhero’s Creed: Everything happens for a reason!

Recent test: I am a single mother. That will be the most challenging test ever, but to top it off I have decided to continue to work full time while starting my own business, The MommE-Shop.

Putting Your Powers to Use: A few months ago I attended a lunch in which the Editor-In-Chief of Essence magazine spoke about finding yourself and your career. As a single mother I had worked to keep food on the table and to pay the bills, but hadn’t really found my passion. After that lunch I started a blog, MommE-Talk. It was my voice on being a single mother, things my friends and I were going through and totally no holds barred. Once I started writing, I had friends, both single and married, tell me how thankful they were to hear from a mom of color.  After seeing what other organizations were out there I started the MommE-shop: an event company focusing on working mothers of color in NYC. This is my major focus, outside of being a mom and I’m really excited about it. This past year I have also been able to plan my mother’s wedding, so I’ve been a busy mom bee. I also service my community as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a Black PRSA member.
