Y’all know we don’t like to write about the Kardashians over here. For as much as they’ve profited off of Black culture, Black art, Black looks, Black people, they don’t need our additional exposure. But sometimes the hypocrisy and audacity becomes too much to excuse or ignore.

This past weekend, Kim Kardashian wore a one of a kind Mugler dress from the archives.

Days after, Kardashian debuted the outfit via her social media channels, Fashion Nova announced that they were making something very similar.

Afterward, Kardashian shared her thoughts about the swift duplication.

The fact that Kardashian is devastated by the fact that her outfits are being duplicated is dramatic and perhaps even insensitive given everything that’s going on in the world. After all, Kim Kardashian is an influencer. One of the biggest around. It’s insane to believe that her wearing and posting her outfits wouldn’t have implications in the real world. That’s what influencers do. Influence commercialism. As a woman who’s been in this game for as long as Kardashian has, she should know what’s up.

The truth is, the Mugler dress she wore is one of kind. Even if people could afford it, they couldn’t get it. So in come fast fashion brands to the rescue, providing a look for the masses. That’s the business. And the function of a business is to make money.

Fashion Nova said as much in response to Kardashian’s series of tweets.

Basically, it is what it is.

But even if it weren’t, one of the Kardashian’s own has been guilty of ripping off a fashion designer.

In 2017, Khloe Kardashian released a promotional video for her new clothing line Good American.

Shortly after its debut, Black designer Destiny Bleu came forward with accusations that Kardashian had stolen her work. And she had receipts to prove it. Kardashian ordered one of every item from her site, never posted herself wearing it and then copied the design for her own collection.

Bleu shared her story on Twitter.

Fashion Nova designing a dress that looks like Mugler’s doesn’t take any money out of Kardashian or the designer’s pockets. Again, there was only one dress made. And it’s not for sale. But Khloe stealing designs from an independent designer will impact her business. In fact, it could put her out of business entirely. The next time Kardashian wants to be devastated, she should look at her own family before she addresses fast fashion brands.
