(Washington Informer) — To say that a new day is dawning with the passing of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act in the nation’s capital is an understatement. Countless civil rights supporters nationwide, gay and straight, are still celebrating the victorious 11-2 vote last month among the Washington D.C. City Council to allow homosexual people the same rights to the institution of marriage as heterosexuals.

This act allows the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community to take advantage of protections and rights that other married couples and families are eligible to receive. Some of the rights, according to the Gay and Lesbian Couples Network, affect hospital visitation, Social Security benefits, health insurance, estate taxes, retirement savings, family leave, nursing homes, home protection and pension.
