(Chicago Sun Times) — The Austin neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago once was a manufacturing mecca. Bustling factories used to cast sweet shadows. Brach’s Candy operated the world’s largest candy factory under the Lake Street L. Leaf made malted milk balls near Augusta and Cicero. Mars Candy still has a chocolate manufacturing site at 2019 N. Oak Park. Even Helene Curtis had a beautiful plant at Cicero and North Avenue.
