Why is the World Gaga for Kate Middleton?

In November of last year, less than half of the public was convinced it was a good idea for William to marry Kate, a commoner, but this has now leapt to an overwhelming majority of 85 per cent.  Moreover, a poll taken in 2010 shows that eighty per cent of people think William would make a better king than his father, and 87 per cent see Kate as a better queen than Camilla.  People love a good, romantic love story, and now they have it.  Prince finds a common girl.  Prince falls in love.  They get married and live happily ever after.  However, the overwhelming affection from the public is not always part of the equation.  Kate Middleton has impressed the world with her modest fashions, charitable efforts and down to earth persona.  Take a look at these 7 reasons Kate is more “normal” that you might think.

1. Her Reasonable Fashion

Since the media got a hold of William’s girlfriend, Kate Middleton, they have been following her around like hound dogs.  What you should notice is that her fashion has not skyrocketed since becoming a Duchess.  Yes, she now has access to top designers and does partake every now and again, as she should, but generally speaking she has remained very level-headed about the value of her clothes.  For example, Kate can be seen in a $60 jacket from Zara and $80 blue polyester dress from the same store.  Kate could easily throw department stores by the wayside and be all Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada, but she is not.  Seeing such a public figure in clothes that any woman can buy makes her budget-friendly fashion a hit and only increases her number of worldwide fans.  Her modest fashions are catching the attention of prominent style magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar who named the royal lady as their best dressed for 2011.

2. She’s does charity work

Like most celebrities, Kate could easy write a check each month to keep her charitable reputation alive, but this Duchess actually puts in time.  She often visits the children’s cancer center at the Royal Marsden Hospital, which the pair opened September 2011.  The newly opened Oak Centre is one of the largest comprehensive children’s cancer centers in Europe, seeing more than 5,000 patients a year.  Prince William was appointed President of The Royal Marsden Hospital in May 2007, the position previously held by his late mother Diana Princess of Wales.  Kate is thoroughly involved at the hospital as well and is known to write personal letters to the children she meets in the center.

3. She puts her money where her mouth is

This year, 600,000 people bought tickets to view Kate’s gown, grossing about $16.5 million.  Some of this money reportedly went to maintaining historical pieces at the Royal Palaces, but much went to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s charities.  One specific charity close to William’s hearts is the Child Bereavement Charity, which they donated $1 million to recently after hosting a dinner at St. James’s Palace for the 100 Women in Hedge Funds.  In fact, this past Wednesday The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge worked on behalf of millions of famine-hit children in Africa and donated funds that will send crucial medical help and food to ease the tragedy.

4.  She had a modest upbringing

Middleton was raised by her parents in a modest home and attended high school, then college just like a “normal” girl.  She graduated college with an MA in History of Art and continued on to accept a position as an accessory buyer for the clothing chain Jigsaw.  She also worked part-time as a catalogue photographer until 2001 and also dibble dabbled as a webpage designer and marketing officer to her parents company “Party Pieces,” a mail order company that sells party supplies and decorations.  The difference in her story, however, is that her college boyfriend was Prince William.  Beside that minor snag, Kate grew up as an ordinary young adult and many people find that comforting and relatable.

5. She is relatable

The Daily Express reported that during their second year at St. Andrews University, in Scotland, Kate and William shared a house with two other students.  Is that something you would expect a prince to do?  At the time, Middleton was dating a fellow student and was simply friends with William, but feelings developed in this co-ed apartment and eventually the couple began to date.  It’s relatable to see Kate, a normal college student, splitting up rent and living in a crowded co-ed apartment.  Kate did not live in a beautiful house by herself and lure William into her money pit.  Instead, she concentrated on her studies and was haphazardly connected with William during their time living together.

6. She’s sporty

Now here’s a girl who knows how to break a sweat.  When it came to field hockey, Kate was quoted to have “real strength lay on the field.”  She was also part of the tennis, netball, rounders and swimming team.  To this day Kate reportedly “remains a total sports obsessive” who works out in the gym nearly every day.

7. Even celebrities look up to her

In a world where celebrities often appear partially nude on the front covers of magazines, gossip sites, and the news, it’s refreshing to see a fully clothed Kate taking over.  Many girls feel that modesty is synonymous with frumpy, boring, and unattractive and that guys will never pay attention to them if they don’t have enough skin showing.  However, celebrity fans including Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victoria Beckham, Giuliana Rancic, and Adele appreciate her lady-like style and admire her fashion sense.   ”I’m just very grateful to Kate Middleton for making looking appropriate really fun again,” Hathaway concluded. Even style icon Sarah Jessica Parker has listed Kate Middleton as her own fashion inspiration.
