For the past week, the media has been airing the back and forth between President Trump, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. Folks have been trying to figure out who was lying. To any sane and logical person, the answer was obvious. President Trump is a documented liar, with news organizations devoting entire columns and countless hours fact-checking his often outlandish statements. I’m not familiar with Wilson’s track record. But as a Black woman and someone who was not Trump, she already had one up.
The issue they were debating was what Trump said to the widow of a soldier killed in Niger, La David Johnson, when he called her, moments before she received his body from the airport.
Wilson said that Trump told Wilson that her late husband “knew what he signed up for but that it hurts anyway.”
It’s cold, callous, inconsiderate, insensitive; still, given President Trump’s track record not at all surprising. This is the same man throwing paper towels in Puerto Rico after the country was decimated by Hurricane Maria–among other things.
When Wilson spoke on Trump’s comments he and Kelly immediately say what they always do: “Fake News.” They accused her of lying.
What they failed to consider is that she was not the only person in the car who heard his comments.
Today, La David Johnson’s widow, Myeshia Johnson, spoke to “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos about her husband, his death and specifically what Donald Trump said on the phone. You can read her comments about the phone call below.
Me and my family was in the limo to receive my husband from I think that was Dover we went to. We was literally on the airport strip, getting ready to get out. He called Master Sergant’s Neil phone. I asked Master Sergeant Neil to put his phone on speaker so my Aunt and Uncle could hear him as well. And he goes on to say in his statement–what he said , yes the president, ‘He knew what he signed up for but it hurts anyways.’
It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone in his voice and how he said it. He couldn’t remember my husband’s name. The only way he remembered my husband’s name was because he told me he had my husband report in front of him and that’s when he actually said La David. I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name. And that what hurted me the most because if my husband is out here fighting for our country and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name? And that what made me upset and cry any more because my husband was an awesome soldier. He did what it take people, other soldiers, like five years to do, in three years. So imagine if my husband was here now. If he was here now, he would have been on his way to being an E6 or an E7. My husband had high hopes in the military career.
Stephanopoulos: What did you say to the president?
I didnt say anything. I just listened.
Very upset and hurt. It made me cry even worse.
On congresswoman Wilson
Ms. Wilson, my uncle in law was Ms. Wilson’s elementary school principal. And my husband was in her 5000 role model program. That’s why she’s real connected with us because she’s been in our family since we were little kids.
On the President and John Kelly saying Frederica Wilson was lying.
Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated. What she said was a 100 percent correct. It was Master Sergeant Neil, me, my aunt, my uncle, the driver and Ms. Wilson in the car. The phone was on speaker. Why would we fabricate something like that?
Stephanopoulos: Is there anything you would like to say to the President now?
No. I don’t– Nah. I don’t have nothing to say to him.
Stephanopoulos: What are you going to tell your daughter about her dad?
I’m going to tell her how awesome her dad was and how a great father he was and how he died as a hero.
She handled this extremely well, given the circumstances. The fact that a grieving widow would have to speak on the President of the United States’ lies as she buries him, continues raising her other children and is carrying another, is unreal.
And in true Donald Trump fashion, he couldn’t resist tweeting about the interview, having the gall to question Johnson’s account of the situation.
