There have been a slew of wigs, weaves, and straight styles in between our first meeting of Kerry Washington in Save the Last Dance and her landing the role of Olivia Pole on Scandal. As of late though, you’ve probably noticed the actress has been rocking more textured strands when out in about in LA and even on red carpets, and there’s a reason for that: her kids.
Kerry is the cover star for the November issue of Allure magazine in which she talks all things beauty, including beauty standards and how she’s bucking them. One of those ways is embracing her hair’s natural texture again, which the 40-year-old, who the mag notes has a three-year-old daughter, a nine-month-old son, and a stepdaughter, says she does because of those children.
“I like to wear my natural texture, especially now because I have children and I want them to know that their hair is perfect as it is,” Kerry said. “They don’t have to change it or straighten it. They can, but they don’t have to.”
In a separate beauty Q&A, Kerry even listed her hair as her favorite feature. “I have grown to like my hair more and more over the years. I won’t have any chemicals in it. I stopped relaxing my hair in my early 20s.”
Kerry’s hair looks absolutely glorious in every single photo from the spread and when Buzzfeed talked to her hairstylist, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, she said the vision was to show the A-list star’s “raw beauty.”
She explained, “[Black women] have been wearing braids, but everybody’s wearing them now, and they’re so perfect. But it doesn’t always have to be so neat and with extensions.”
We think Kerry looks perfect either way.
