Cam Newton Issues Apology For “Degrading And Disrespectful” Comment To Female Reporter
As we told you previously, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton found himself embroiled in some controversy this week after responding to a serious question reporter Jourdan Rodrigue posed with, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes” while grinning. Whatever his intentions were when he made the comment, the remarks were immediately met with criticism. Sponsor Dannon actually pulled their agreement with Newton, stating that his comments were “entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace.”

The news conference where he made his remarks took place on Wednesday, and after much backlash, by Thursday evening, the 28-year-old put out a video statement apologizing for what he’d said.
In it, Newton says “after careful thought, I realize that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women” before apologizing to anyone offended. He also said that as someone who tries to use his platform to be a positive role model to help and inspire others, he understands why his statements were “unacceptable.” And as a father (he has a daughter and son with girlfriend Kia Proctor, and sees her daughter from a previous relationship as his own), he wouldn’t want his daughters treated in such a manner.
“I’m a father to two beautiful daughters,” he said. “At their age I try to instill in them that they can do and be anything that they want to be. And the fact that during this whole process, I’ve already lost sponsors and countless fans, I realize that the joke is really on me and I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this.”
He ended the video with, “To the reporters, to the journalists, to the moms, supermoms, to the daughters, the sisters and the women all around the world, I sincerely apologize and hope you can find the kindness in your heart to forgive me.”
