People were quite shocked but not surprised to see rapper Common attend the Creative Arts Emmys in September with political analyst and attorney Angela Rye. They’re both very outspoken on social justice issues and passionate about Black people and culture. On that same evening that they made their red carpet debut, Rye, 37, pretty much confirmed that they were more than just friends when she posted a very warm celebratory message for him after he won an Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics for “Letter to the Free” from the Ava DuVernay Netflix documentary, 13th.
Super proud of this guy for having a big #EGO, which is not to be confused with a big ego. Here he is giving thanks to the Almighty for his Emmy just like he does for taking every breath, every single day. I'm thankful for his tremendous example of humility, leadership, kindness, and creativity. May we all be inspired to #WORKwoke. ✊🏾💕 #heisSOdope #itsjustthebeginning #TonyhereheCOMES #soblessed Prov. 3:5-6 * (if you haven't heard "Letter to the Free" you're missing out…download post haste)
While the rapper, 45, may not have publicly addressed whether or not he was dating Rye then, he wasn’t too shy about addressing their relationship when he spoke to Bevy Smith last week.
While visiting the SiriusXM studios on Friday to chat with Smith for her show, Bevelations, she asked him about his connection with Rye. According to the “Black America Again” rapper, it’s quite strong.

Bevy Smith: Speaking of sexy. You do a lot of good work with a lot of amazing people…You’ve worked with so many people. Lately you’ve been seen out and about with another very woke person, Angela Rye!
Smith: She’s sexy, she’s beautiful, she’s lightskin-ded. Is there a connection?
Common: [Laughs] Yes, there’s definitely a connection with Angela Rye. She’s a wonderful woman. And you know, I’ll just say I’m dating. I’m happy right now. She’s an incredible human being.
Without being asked to, Common continued speaking about the CNN political commentator.
“The good thing about Angela, too, she’s just a fun person,” he said. “She’s obviously about the mission and about the people, but still.”
He went on to note that being “woke” doesn’t mean you can’t also be a lighthearted person, and Rye is that and many other things — just like him.
“Just because you’re conscious and aware don’t mean you gotta not have fun,” Common added. “You’re still going to kick it, and that’s part of me too.”
