Scientology And Nine Other Times Jada Pinkett Smith Has Had To Set The Record Straight About Her Life
Leah Remini is all over the news these days. Not for any recent acting gigs but for the fact that she’s on a crusade to expose Scientology. I’ve watched every last one of the episodes on the docu series on A&E “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath.” The show is beyond fascinating. From what little I knew the “religion” always seemed weird to me. But Remini’s show and her work in interviewing former scientologists really exposes how cult-like and detrimental he can be and has been to so many families.
When people see Remini, it’s all they want to talk about. Because not only does she have the show, she wrote a book about it, called Troublemaker.
Full disclosure, while I have purchased the book, I have yet to read it. Either way, in it she alleges that Jada Pinkett Smith is still a practicing scientologist. She says that one evening she went over to Tom Cruise’s house where Cruise asked the group of adults to play hide and seek. Remini’s story was just one of many about the connection the Smiths have to the religion.
When Pinkett-Smith appeared on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live” and he asked her about the hide and seek thing, Pinkett-Smith didn’t mince words. Instead, she said that Remini lied flat out. Still, that didn’t stop the discussion. Jada Pinkett Smith has been seen at Scientology’s Celebrity Centre.
It had people thinking. The story got bigger and bigger until finally, a few hours ago, Pinkett-Smith addressed Leah’s claims through her Twitter account. See what she had to say.
Reads like a poem, doesn’t it. This is not the first time Jada has found herself having to come forward and explain a few things. Check out the other incidents on the following pages.
You’ve heard the rumors. They’re swingers, Will is gay and Jada is his beard. And one of them was that the way they’ve been able to keep their relationship thriving is because they’re able to step out and sleep with other people. The rumors were fueled by Jada saying that Will can do what he wants to do. Eventually, she had to clarify and say that their relationship is not open, it’s grown.
“Let me first say this, there are far more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether I have an open marriage or not. I am addressing this issue because a very important subject has been born from discussions about my statement that may be worthy of addressing.”
You would have to have lived under a rock not to know that Jada and Pac had a relationship. And while people have projected their own thoughts and wishes onto it, believing it was romantic. Jada has had to step forward several times to explain what it really was. She said that Pac was a good friend, like a father and then there was the recent admission that she was a drug dealer when they first met. It was the complex and layered nature of their relationship that made her speak out about why she was so hurt by the film’s portrayal of her.
One thing I want to say about me making that statement was, it wasn’t to have people not go see it. It was just I wanted people to know what you’re seeing in regards to my relationship with Tupac is not true. And that was important to me because…my relationship really is special. And it was very complicated. And I just felt like it was a huge disservice and that really through my relationship with Pac would have shown people what he truly was. Because it was one thing to see Pac’s persona publicly, and who he was personally. And you know, what made it even more painful was those guys know me. Those Code Black dudes know me. We’ve done business together. We did Free Angela together, so I know that they knew how to reach for me. And that’s not to say that I would have participated in it either, but it was just, across the board, I thought it was just handled in a very disrespectful way. And I felt like it was exploitative of me and Pac, how they used our relationship to sell a movie. And I just felt like it was tomb raiding in regards to Pac.
And if you’re really saying you’re honoring a man’s legacy, then honor his legacy. And if you don’t have the story, fall back until you do. And I feel like we as Black people, we have got to protect those individuals that we say are important to us, to our history and to our culture. We can’t expect other people to do that if we’re not willing to do that ourselves. Pac is precious to us. It was just really hard and it was really hard to just be with it in the way that I had to, but it’s all good. But I do believe that when we’re doing biopics about people that are a part of our community and who are special to us, we have to treasure and we really have to tell those stories in a special way. And it can’t be about money. It can’t be about money…I just really feel like these cats — nobody’s stupid. We all here know how this game is played. Ain’t nobody dumb. So you can pull the wool over anybody’s eyes you want, but here’s what’s real: If they can wake up in the morning and look at themselves in the mirror, because we all know what sits in our hearts, and here’s who you can’t hide from — the higher power. So if you really feel like you did right by Pac, then congratulations. But if you didn’t, really sit with that. Cause I hope next time if you get an opportunity to make another movie about a legend, you’ll do a different thing.
Willow moving out of her house
At one point, reports circled that Willow had moved out of her parents’ house. But Jada set the record straight on that too.
“Listen, only Jaden and Trey [moved out]! Willow is still with me,” Pinkett Smith told “Entertainment Tonight” on Sunday. “Yes, Willow hasn’t left yet. Now, she will be 18 soon and I’m sure as soon as she turns 18, she’s out. But I have two that are gone, Jaden and Trey are gone. But Willow is still there!”
Will and Jada have often been characterized as “hands off” when it comes to raising their children. And a lot of people don’t tend to agree with the decisions their children have made as they seem to stand back and watch. But in an interview with The Huffington Post, Pinkett-Smith said,
“You kind of have to release that perfectionism and you have to release that judgement in order for your kids to just develop in a healthy way,” she explained of her own parenting approach. Further unlike Stacy, the actress just wants to be supportive of whatever works for each individual mother. There’s many different ways to mother, there’s no one cookie-cutout way to be a mother. So, I think, as a mother and as a woman, trying to support other women in how they see it’s best to mother their children is very important. And also in being a mother and being supportive of your children and allowing them to self-actualize and become who they think they should be versus who we as parents want them to be.”
Whew! She had people upset with this video about her decision to boycott the Oscars because there were far too many films that didn’t celebrate people of color. Before people understood her point, they attacked the hell out of it. Even Will Smith’s tv auntie Janet Hubert crawled out of the woodworks to throw stones. Jada responded to her and offered some clarification for anyone who might have been confused.
“This whole Oscar controversy isn’t really about the Oscars,” Pinkett Smith, 44, said in a new video shared by Entertainment Tonight. “Really, in my plea to ask all communities and people of color to take back our power is so that we can use it in all sectors of our community, and right now, specifically with African-American people, we have some very serious issues that I think we as a people have to move together on. I’m hoping we can find ways to step together in this instead of finding ways to fight each other,” she added. “I got love for everybody.”
When Willow posted an image of herself and her friend Moises Arias in bed, with her laying in front of him, people jumped all over it. Insinuating that there was something sexual about it, that perhaps the two were in a relationship. And whatnot.
When the paparazzi ran into Jada she had plenty to say about people’s projections. “Here’s the deal. There was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation. You guys are projecting your trash onto it. And you’re acting like covert pedophiles, and that’s not cool.”
Jaden’s Thoughts On Education
Four years ago, on Twitter, Jaden Smith wrote, that the world would be better “if everybody in the world dropped out of school.” The public promptly jumped on it, shaming him for discouraging education. Of course, Jada came to her first born’s defense via her Facebook page.
“We continually forget that life is about discovering ourselves and our purpose. We spend so much time criticising one another for the decisions or inevitable pitfalls along the way that we forget that making mistakes, falling, failing and getting up again is exactly what life is about. Instead we try to use criticism as a way to pretend that we don’t fall, we don’t make mistakes or struggle, we pretend we have it ALL together, when we don’t. None of us have it all together. At some point I hope we all get to what’s real and surrender to the fact that we are all in the same boat, discovering and trying to figure out this thing called life so we might as well support each other along the way.
Just remember, you’re good, no matter what anyone else says. You are right where you need to be today. Keep living. The answers will come and be patient with yourself and others while we all…discover.”
Every few years or so, the Smiths are said to be on the verge of divorce. And while the couple tries to avoid the rumors for as long as possible. Eventually, one of them ends up clarifying. In 2011, they released a joint statement: “Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completey false,” the statement says. “We are still together, and our marriage is intact.”
