Do You Recognize The Beauties Who Inspired These New Barbies?
Christian Siriano has quickly become your favorite Black girls’ favorite designer. Since becoming the youngest winner in Project Runway history, his gowns have been worn by Michelle Obama, Solange, Issa Rae, Angela Bassett, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and most recently Cardi B. Notably, Siriano was also the only designer to step up to the plate and provide a dress for Leslie Jones for the 2016 premiere of Ghostbusters, and now that stunning red gown has inspired one of five dolls in a new collection of Christian Siriano Barbies.
That other brown beauty you see above is Danielle Brooks who was one of the models for last year’s Christian Siriano x Lane Bryant collection. Meg Ryan and Sarah Hyland are the other two celebrity-inspired dolls while the fifth is the 2018 resort Barbie.
“I don’t go after the young, new It Girl,” Siriano told People earlier this year when asked about dressing a variety of frames and figures for the red carpet. “They’re fabulous, but what’s exciting to me is seeing someone different on the carpet looking amazing, like Leslie Jones or Meg Ryan or Danielle Brooks, whom I love so much.”
It’s clear Mattel loves those ladies too and it’s refreshing to see they were chosen for this select group of dolls. Shout out to Siriano and Mattel for realizing representation matters.
