Tyler Perry Donates $1 Million To Hurricane Relief And Joel Osteen’s Church
After Hurricane Harvey hit landfall and devastated Houston, Texas and surrounding areas, many of Hollywood’s A-listers have coughed up dough to help those impacted. Amongst those many is Tyler Perry.
The actor, comedian, and filmmaker donated a whopping $1 million for victims, rationing $250,000 of the funds to televangelist Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church.
In a message he posted to his fans on Facebook earlier this week, Perry defended giving money to the church in the midst of the backlash the Osteens’ received for their delayed availability of using the church as refuge for those displaced after the hurricane.
“I know that there’s been some controversy about Joel Osteen and him not opening the doors of the church,” Perry said. “Joel and Victoria are amazing people — there’s no way that they would lock people out of the church or not let people seek shelter.”
Perry continued, saying, “There were some safety concerns, and I spoke to them on the phone, and it all made perfect sense to me. So, before you just run and judge someone real quick, you need to know the whole circumstances.”
With the Lakewood Church now open as a distribution center and shelter for evacuees, Perry also shared in his video message that he was locating another $250,000 to Beyonce’s pastor Rudy Rasmus. Perry went on to advise watchers and those interested in helping that it’s best to reach out and support those with “boots on the ground.”
