Laverne Cox has not kept her love and admiration for Beyoncé a secret by any means. And when she finally got to meet her earlier this year at the Grammys, she made sure to tell us how she felt when it all went down.
She told People, “I walked over and I was strangely calm and she was sitting there and everyone was surrounding her—because she’s Beyoncé and she’s the queen. And then she saw me and her face lit up, and she was like, ‘Help me up!’—she’s pregnant so she needed some help up. I was like, ‘I’ll help you up,’ and she got up and gave me a big hug.”
She told her, “‘I love you,’ and she was like, ‘I know you do…I love you, too.’ And she’s like ‘Your Lip Sync Battle was amazing,’—she had seen I did Destiny’s Child,” Cox said.
And apparently their run in at the Grammys wasn’t the last time they spoke because according to a recent interview she did with Access Hollywood, the two are working on a project to be revealed next month.
When asked how the collaboration came about she said, “I have no idea, to be perfectly honest. Like, does she pick out her biggest fans ever and let them work with her? It’s pretty amazing.”
In actuality, Beyoncé has wanted to collaborate with the star for some time now. The singer wanted Cox to appear in her video “Sorry.”
Cox told People, “Actually, Miss Tina contacted me about their initial concept of “Sorry” from Lemonade. They wanted to have all these powerful, empowered Black women in the video and they wanted to have me and Viola [Davis] and Kerry [Washington].”
But Laverne couldn’t make it due to her schedule.
“I was shooting Rocky Horror Picture Show at the time and they were like, ‘Can you get the EP to shoot something and send it to us?’ and there was just no time to do it. The concept changed. And could you imagine anyone else? I mean, there was Serena Williams like giving us full life.”
Everything happens for a reason. And what is meant to be will be.
While Cox was tight-lipped about the details (honestly, I’m surprised she could even mention the project.), she did say that she’ll be able to share more information on September 6.
We’ll be sure to keep you posted.
