Last night, BET aired its annual celebration of Black Girl Magic known as Black Girls Rock! and it goes without saying that the stars of the show were honorees Maxine Waters and Yara Shahidi, as well as the host of this year’s festivities, Taraji P. Henson. In fact, all eyes were on Taraji’s tresses, which got progressively bigger and bolder as the night went on.
The 46-year-old beauty started the night with her new natural crop cut and those curls did nothing but pop under the mainstage lights. The actress’s hairstylist Tymothe Wallace explained, “Taraji’s undercut that I cut back in January was growing in and she liked her natural curls that were growing in. We decided to just be free and wear the curls but added some color to make it bold and a fit for Taraji.”
When asked how we can get our curls to pack the same punch, Tym said “I can’t stress this enough — moisture, moisture, moisture.”
“Moisture is extremely important when taking care of this look,” he emphasized. “Keep hair hydrated with a moisturizing conditioner like Dove Absolute Curls Conditioner. Incorporate coconut and jojoba oils into your leave-in serums or conditioners (Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum). And lastly, double strand twist the hair to create a more defined texture.”
- First, I sprayed a small amount of Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo to refresh her hair.
- To create the voluminous curls, I used a wand on her hair while spraying Dove Style+Care Flexible Hold Hairspray to create a firm hold. I then let her hair cool.
- Using Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum, I ran it through her hair with my fingers and brushed out the curls for texture and volume.
- To finish the look, I sprayed Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray to tame any flyaways.
