Last night, BET aired its annual celebration of Black Girl Magic known as Black Girls Rock! and it goes without saying that the stars of the show were honorees Maxine Waters and Yara Shahidi, as well as the host of this year’s festivities, Taraji P. Henson. In fact, all eyes were on Taraji’s tresses, which got progressively bigger and bolder as the night went on.

The 46-year-old beauty started the night with her new natural crop cut and those curls did nothing but pop under the mainstage lights. The actress’s hairstylist Tymothe Wallace explained, “Taraji’s undercut that I cut back in January was growing in and she liked her natural curls that were growing in. We decided to just be free and wear the curls but added some color to make it bold and a fit for Taraji.”

When asked how we can get our curls to pack the same punch, Tym said “I can’t stress this enough — moisture, moisture, moisture.”

“Moisture is extremely important when taking care of this look,” he emphasized. “Keep hair hydrated with a moisturizing conditioner like Dove Absolute Curls Conditioner. Incorporate coconut and jojoba oils into your leave-in serums or conditioners (Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum). And lastly, double strand twist the hair to create a more defined texture.”

By the end of the night, Taraji traded in her close crop for the long, flowing tresses she’s known for, which Tym said was deliberate.
“To close out this annual celebration of Black girls rocking, we wanted to add a little drama to the hair – and why not do that with bouncy and voluminous curls?”
