Michaela Coel Says There Are Currently No Plans For Chewing Gum Season 3
If you’re a Chewing Gum fan in the U.S., you’re probably used to having to wait a while to get to see Michaela Coel’s hit series on Netflix. But it seems that we’re all going to have to sit back and wait, or pray actually, for there to be a third season, because as of right now, the creator seems to be done.
A report in U.K. publication Broadcast said that Coel wasn’t going to continue with the series. She reportedly told Channel E4, where the show has aired, that she’d reached a “creative peak” for the program. But the comedy head made it clear that if Coel is interested in continuing with the show or wants to do another project with them, they’d love it.
“She’s a very funny and clever writer so she’ll always have a home here if she wants to do a project with us,” said comedy head Fiona McDermott to Broadcast.
“It’s bittersweet but it’s always been part of what we do here. We establish people and then there’s a point where they have to move on.”
And a rep for Coel has since confirmed such statements with The Fader by saying Coel is focusing on other projects.
“Michaela is not currently writing a third series of Chewing Gum as she is focussing [sic] on some other projects, but is not closing the door to the possibility in the future.”
And Coel herself is now speaking out, thanking fans for their support (but also telling them not to hold their breath).
Chewing Gum generated a lot of buzz for Coel, who would go on to win a BAFTA for best actress in a comedy series for her work on the project. The series all started as a one-woman show called Chewing Gum Dreams that Coel starred in at National Theatre. But the star is ready to take her talents on to the next big project, for now, and whatever it is, we’ll definitely be watching.
