Are You Bothered By This Solange-Inspired Look?
Wildly popular makeup artist Patrick Starrr has found himself on the wrong side of society’s “What can I find an unnecessary problem with today?” world after wearing an afro textured wig with an ensemble inspired by Solange.
Starrr posted the photo of slayage below with the caption “Peace. Love. Positivity,” which is exactly what he received in return. That is until a few individuals with too much time on their hands decided to point the cultural appropriation finger at the Filipino YouTube star.
The issue wasn’t Starrr’s wardrobe or outfit, it was the afro-textured wig some felt crossed the ever-muddy cultural appropriation line and they didn’t waste any time letting him know.
After one too many responses like the ones above, Starr issued an apology, explaining that his look was inspired by Solange on her wedding day and that he didn’t mean to offend anyone.
“I want to apologize for offending anyone with my hairstyle last night. I wanted to celebrate a beautiful hairstyle inspired by Solange. I am not in any way claiming to be black. I am Filipino and accepting and I hope we can all celebrate beauty/diversity all together.”
I, personally, can’t get behind the outrage over Starrr’s look, as he often wears wigs when recreating looks from various famous women. If he’d worn a straight wig instead of a kinky one I’m certain people would’ve accused him of giving in to eurocentric beauty standards and failing to embrace Solange’s naturally textured hair. People have got to learn the line between appreciation and appropriation and choose their battles more wisely. There’s nothing to fight about here.
