Niecy Nash On Claws Making Her A Sex Symbol At 47, Fighting For Karrueche To Play Virginia
Have you been watching Claws? If so, then you know how juicy of a Sunday night show it is to indulge in. Niecy Nash makes it even juicier with her portrayal of Desna. She’s a complicated character with a tough past who is working to provide a better future for herself and her brother Dean (Harold Perrineau). Desna is also a sexual character.
Her flashy Florida-inspired attire is curve-hugging, the girls are usually out and sitting, and she isn’t afraid to have sex in the office of her nail shop when there is a full house. Nash told Access Hollywood Live recently that playing the fiery character has helped her become something of a sex symbol to people. Her work, along with that of her co-stars, including Carrie Preston, 50, as Polly and Judy Reyes, 49, as Quiet Ann, shows you that “women of a certain age” can be a lot more than what people try to frame them as.
“We are women of a certain age, but we are still viable, sexual, we’re full and complicated characters,” she said. “And so, you know, that’s a good get. I didn’t know I was going to start being seen as a sex symbol at 47. Wait a minute!”
She continued, “They’re like, ma’am, can you put those on the glass please? [laughs]”
Another standout performer on the show, aside from Nash, is Karrueche Tran. She plays Virginia, a former prostitute and nail tech who goes from being an enemy of Desna to saving her life and ending up in her inner circle. Nash revealed that trying to cast that role was difficult until she put Tran’s name in the ear of casting and producers. It ended up being a great move and quite the opportunity for Tran (who, thanks in part to the show, is living her very best life).
“I’m so happy for her,” Nash said. “Because you know, being the new baby in this particular bunch, this particular role was a challenge to get cast. I read against every girl in town and then I was like, ‘Do you guys know Karrueche Tran? Maybe we should bring her in.’ And it worked out to be the perfect choice to play Virginia.”
In case you missed the boat, you can play catch up by watching Claws on TNT on Sundays at 9 p.m. There are two more episodes until the season finale.
