When He’s Not Playing Lawrence, Did You Know Jay Ellis Is A Pilates Instructor?
In a new interview with XoNecole, Insecure‘s Jay Ellis revealed that when he’s not accruing a #TeamLawrence following and breaking the backs of Issa and Tasha on the hit HBO series, he’s actually helping people improve the strength, flexibility and posture of their backs as a Pilates instructor. The 35-year-old is teaching 20 hours a year worth of classes at the fitness studio he owns with a friend called body + in Lafayette, Louisiana.
“Years ago, a friend of mine that I used to model with moved back home to Lafayette, Louisiana. Initially he wasn’t sure what he was going to do down there so we decided to open some stores together,” he said. “We just built a new studio space that we own. To keep our insurance, I have to be trained in Pilates and I teach a minimum number of hours every year.”
Ellis said teaching is much harder than acting and quite a few other things he’s done in his life because the women who attend the classes force him to step his game up.
“I teach about 20 hours annually, which is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life because it’s so much core strength that I thought I had, but these women are in class kicking my a–!” Ellis said. “They’re making it look effortless while I’m literally shaking the entire time! But it’s been amazing and a lot of fun.”
The challenge seems to be paying off greatly. Ellis, who is also a boxing fan, is in great shape from head (and booty based on what we saw during the Season 2 premiere) to toe.
As for body +, it’s a pretty fantastic studio. Aside from Pilates, offerings also include yoga and spin classes. The facility sees about 250 clients a day. The space also sells fitness apparel, is an apothecary and offers natural beverages, fresh juices and smoothies, as well as healthy meals. Fine, into fitness and a smart business man? Talk about a catch.
