Now that our former First Lady, Michelle Obama is out of office, she is at liberty to be a bit more blunt and candid than she’s been in the past. And now, with Donald Trump in office and his cabinet members seeking to dismantle everything the Obamas established during their tenure, there is plenty to be blunt about.
We recently learned that the Trump administration was going to scale back the restrictions on healthier school lunch. And Trump’s Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue signed a petition that minimizes standards in three areas for the upcoming school year: whole grains, salt and milk.
During a speaking engagement at the Partnership for a Healthier America summit, in Washington, Mrs. Obama said, “It’s our kids. This isn’t political. Everybody’s got ’em. Republicans, Democrats, Independents. Every religion has kids. Every race…”
“This wasn’t fake news, obesity rates are rising and continue to rise among our youngest.”
“We have a lot more work do do, for sure. But we got make sure we don’t let anybody take us back. Because the question is, where are we going back to? This is where you really have to look at motives. You have to stop and think ‘Why don’t you want our kids to have good food at school? What is wrong with you? And why is that a partisan issue? Why would that be political? What is going on?”
That’s up to moms. I’m talking to Moms, think about this. I don’t care what state you live in. Take me out of the occasion, like me don’t like me. But think about why is someone ok with your kids eating crap? Why would celebrate that? Why would sit idly and be ok with that? Because here’s the secret, if somebody is doing that they don’t care about your kid. And we need to demand deeply that everyone to care deeply about our kids.
We can’t keep wondering why. We got here because we weren’t paying attention. It’s not the blame game. It’s just the reality. You take your eye off the ball on things and you let other people determine what you’re eating, how you’re moving and before you know it your kids have type two diabetes and you’re confused and shocked and hurt. And I hope you have healthcare…”
This is the Michelle Obama we’ve been waiting for. The realness.
