What You Must Do To Your Face Before And After Working Out

I already confessed to you all that I’m kind of the worst when it comes to working out in makeup, and after getting some tips from dermatologist Brooke Jackson,MD, of Skin Wellness Dermatology Clinic, in Durham, NC, I found out I’m actually the worst when it comes to my post-workout skin care regimen as well.

I asked Dr. Jackson if its an absolute must to remove makeup before a good sweat session and, as expected, she told me “Ideally, yes.” And in the same way it’s essential to wash down below after exercising to prevent infections, you want to do the same with your face.

“Wash as soon as possible to remove dirt, grime, sweat,” Dr. Jackson said. “Your increased body heat from your workout provides an attractive environment for bacteria and yeast to thrive and those who are downwind will appreciate it.”

But just because you went hard at the gym doesn’t mean you need to go hard on your face. “Use a gentle cleanser after workouts. Medicated and harsh cleaners will be too irritating if pores are open after a workout.” Dr. Jackson also suggests wearing breathable fabrics to work out in, like Coolmax and Drifit, which wick sweat from you and help minimize breakouts.

And if you’re worried you’ll need to bring your entire medicine cabinet’s worth of skincare products with you to do right by your skin before working out, don’t worry. A cleanser is pretty much all you’ll need.

“No need to moisturize because presumably you will be sweating,” Dr. Jackson explained. “You should, however, apply a sunscreen if you will be outdoors (running, cycling etc.).”

Don’t even think about skipping this step after working out though.

“Post workout moisturizing is a must, especially after a shower. Be sure to fully moisturize your body! I recommend Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion, with 100% pure cocoa butter and microdroplets of Vaseline jelly, it’s the ideal double-duty moisturizer to keep skin deeply hydrated and smooth. Keep a travel-size version in your gym bag for easy carrying!”
