Shout Out To Melina Matsoukas, Video Director Extraordinaire

October 26, 2011  |

Sometimes you gotta recognize great art for the great art that it is. After watching Rihanna’s video for “We Found Love,” I was once again so impressed by how so many of RihRih’s videos convey such a strong mood with great, alternative visuals and how they manage to heighten my love for the songs themselves. Rude Boy and What’s My Name are two of my favorites. Each time, I liked the single better because of the video. Most videos definitely don’t woo me in the same way. For one, I’m sick of so many videos not telling a story and being taped on a sound stage (hello Beyonce, spend some of that hard earned cash).

What’s My Name caputred a chic, lower east side vibe, Rudeboy conveyed a festive, Carribean flavor and this latest one sets a story of a drug-affliced love affair agaisnt the backdrop of a gloomy United Kingdom landscape.

Whose responsible for elevating Rihanna’s game so much? Melina Matsoukas, a woman who has not only directed videos for Rihanna but many other artists including Solange, Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Ciara and Keri Hilson, among many many others. Matsoukas is a graduate of the American Film Institute and New York University, and has been in the directing game since 2006.

Big ups to Matsoukas and folks like her who enhance the pop world with great artistic direction!
